Jay,

Thanks for the kind words. We're years or maybe decades from being experts, but maybe there's an audience for a book about two regular people off the street LEARNING how to sail like Macha.

I agree about the economic situation. My hope at this point is that the government steps out of the way and allows fuel prices to gradually rise. Like the classic "boiling frog" analogy, maybe then people will make gradual lifestyle adjustments without completely going nuts. My fear is that if the government steps in and attempts price caps, rationing, special taxes on oil companies, gas tax holidays, etc. then we are going to see shortages. As we can see in Spain and Portugal, that's when people go pretty mental...

Our plan is to work and save as much money as possible between now and fall of 2010. That's when my options at Yahoo are all done. But depending on the situation, could be sooner. It keeps getting harder to go back to work on Monday after a weekend of sailing. But I keep telling myself that by sticking it out for two more years we have a chance to keep sailing forever.

As for Hawaii, that would be really cool some time... Either while the airlines are still running or in a few years by sail. Don't be surprised one day if Macha is bobbing at anchor in Hilo Harbor.

P.S. Got to sail an Ultimate 24 again last night. This time with the asymmetrical spinnaker up. Very twitchy little boat but very fun planing off the wind!!! Had a new sailor on the helm for a while during which time we accidentally broached, tacked, gibed, and every other damn thing. Luckily, no one spilled any beer.

- Ari
