Jay,

You certainly can't mean that as we enter what is at least the third net loss harvest season in a row, with great financial instability, wars on two official fronts, a third in the wings - possibly as an election surprise, oil at record highs/the dollar at record lows ... and people might - in a flash decide to take their 'money' from the fractional deposit banksters - you mean to tell me that this is more important than Brittney, Paris Hilton and the Wrastlin' Show on TV? C'mon man - that's just CRAZY talk!

Har - Naturally I'm being sarcastic.

Yup - land or sea, the troika of Shelter, Water & Fire (think hearth) are still the hub of survival. Hopefully only the last fraction of a percent is the ability to hang-on to your shelter, water and fire. On the boat, my ability to store and purify (reconstructed Berkey Water Filter in the galley) water, my provisions and all the things that sailors/mountain folk do - well, in the final push, it's worth more than that 'solid' stock portfolio, if the "!"s go to zero in the accounts - what do they really have.

Look - investments in an inflation based economy make sense, but they go to hell almost immediately as soon as the first bank run happens. We can count on the US Fed clamping down on withdrawls, this easily cascades to a rush on the available food and frankly, in a nation that riots when their football team wins, it does not require a rocket scientist to see that the potential for significant social breakdown (that's weasle speak for nice people getting murdered in huge numbers...) it would be damned nice to be able to slip lines and get out of dodge. One full gas tank away and the potential for violence drops off rapidly. I still prefer my odds here than to being on dry land this close to DC.

So - you have your solar for the few things we like, such as renewable lights, in my case, HF radio, and some tunes now and again are nice when I'm down below. What other needs, wants and niceties ? It would make for a good discussion here. How about being able to transfer wealth with little or no ties to the formerly solvent dollar? Gold, silver, tools, skills, chinchilla hide underwear? What's good for maintaining/transfering wealth especially once out of US waters? How about it sailors? What is going to get me into a port in Costa Rica or some other place if they know our banks are flat?

Jay - Understood about Hawaii being a good place to be poor. Being from west central Idaho, that was made for good poor people as well. It was a regular alpine 7-11 up there and only two bridges to isolate us from the yuppies... I can get more meat with aircraft steel cable from the hardware store than with the best Weatherby rifle. Har!

Under sail - I like the odds,I like the people and in general, one tank of gas away frm the coast, I'm likely on a good course in my little 'Bug-Out-Boat'. That's assuming that dropping hook on the other -basically deserted- side of the Virginian Chesapeake is not enough.

I'd like to heard the thoughts from other sailors.
