Subject: Aspect Ratios

I have nothing useful to say about junk rigs.

But on the general of high aspect vs. low aspect ratios: we've been sailing a fair amount lately on the Ultimate 24.

Small, flat-bottomed hull with deep, foil & bulb keel, blade jib and high aspect full batten main.

Sails at 6.5 knots upwind, planes like a demon off the wind. Points a good 5 to 10 degrees higher than most boats I've sailed.

But... very narrow "groove". While close hauled, if you pinch even a little and fall below 4 to 5 knots, you basically just start crabbing sideways. The only cure is to bear off immediately to re-establish laminar flow over the foils.

Well, I guess we all know this theoretically. I'm just saying that there is a very striking difference in feel from a full keel that won't point quite as high but never loses bite.
