Jay has hit the nail right on the head. A boat is a unity of rig and hull form and mixing and matching rarely is to advantage. I have had considerable experience with the junk rig and love it dearly for its qualities. However, it must be coupled with a proper hull form and view of life and sailing to function properly and produce happy results. It has lots of advantages and some disadvantages as do all rigs. A well set-up sloop rig on the proper hull makes an excellent sailing boat, very simple and efficient. No sense spending excessive time and energy overthinking the problem. If something works, it's a sad waste of time and money to fix it. The fun is in the sailing.
But, as Jay says, it's your project. Don't listen to a lot of idle gossip and opinion if the change appeals to you for deeper reasons.
All the best.
