For me, I do not see this as an all-or-nothing situation, requiring either a slightly modified status quo (Latin phrase meaning "the mess we're in." ;^) or a societal deflagration into the stone age. I see more that we've built much of our food and general economy on a narrow ledge of inexpensive and plentiful petro-chemical products and super-cheap transportation of raw materials, goods and services. Thus any squeeze on the petro-chemicals I see as a force multiplier against most of what we laughingly call 'civilisation', in that it's more expensive to create/mine raw materials, then to pack and ship anything and at most/ALL links in the chain. The effect could very possibly add a MULTIPLIER of costs at all stages: bummer!

The food in the ground is often optimized for use of petro-chemical fertilizers and the harvesting in food efficient nations is virtually always mechanized using the same. Processing requires energy, the refrigerated transportation from field to my pressure cooker is all energy dependent and modern material dependent... you can see the links.

Will it all implode and we go 'Water World'? I doubt that. Can it turn into a real PIA, with mob violence and heavy handed and imprecise governmental back lash, often against the most convenient 'target': honest citizens as in the Katrina guns confiscations etc? Sure - we've seen it before in a smaller scale. The spectre of mob violence and government backlash with everyday Joe's caugh in the crossfire concerns me more than the natural results of this insane financial system.

There is another factor: the USA was a haven for most of the world to escape to for about a century and a half (after life became easier...) . However, as North Americans, should things go to pieces, we have no 'America' to 'Go Over The Wall" and run to. I could also see those places which might BE desirable, closing their borders to 'boat people'.

>>> This is more for discussion's sake. Other than the basics of exercising good forethought in our 'seagoing home economics', I see little difference, other than cutting back on my trips to the Piggly-Wiggly and more time stocking my normal spares and repair materials, chow (Beanie-Weenies and Beer) , storable cooking fats/oils and having my dental work and papers in order NOW, while I can. Should I decide that I'd rather winter in Novo Sibersk than in the plume of D.C. my cruising preps should be significantly ready. A receiving country might be more disposed to allow me to stay a while if I have some means of support in addition to my stores aboard. They don't make money from my self sufficiency and even now, financial statement from my BANK are required in some places to keep deadbeats (boat people?) out after too many floating shoplifters 'paid with their sails' for goods and services held on tab ashore. Add a few thousands of 'boat people' desperate for a place to stay and that is a concern.

Time for Bed - One Bottle of Fine Ale Left!

>RadioRay ..._ ._

Ps. Water World WITH Ali McGraw aboard (as int he movie) would be just fine..."
