An interesting thing happened in the northwest US last week. We had a fairly windy week and the windmills were overloading the power grid. The BPA, which runs the hydroelectric dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers, got into a bind because they had to shut down a bunch of turbines to keep from blowing the grid and then spill all the excess water over the dams. They aren't supposed to spill that much water because it can increase the fatality rate among the endangered fish species. The paper said the BPA tried to call the windmill operators to shut down some power generation and only got answering machines.
