I have thought about this topic for years and the best way to deal with it on our little 22' boat. My conclusion: We have propane and a solid fuel burner. It sounds like a lot of stuff on a little boat but we have a 2 burner propane camp stove (you know the type, old school black iron, nothing fancy) and an old shipmate bricklined solid fuel heater that I got off ebay. The cooking surface is small on the shipmate but doable in a small pot or mugs. We get heat from the propane stove by putting on a campstyle oven on top and leaving the door open so the heat can radiate into the cabin. We have to pay attention to the propane not blowing out and leaking into the cabin. It has never happened but I suppose I am asking for trouble. I am looking for another solution to this but really like our stove so may just put in some type of regulator/ solonoid or something.

I think Perry has a Tiny Tot and he likes it. I ordered one on ebay and mine was too rusted to use so I bought the stainless shipmate but I think the tiny tot is a good choice for a small boat.

My husband and I really want a Sardine but the price (with the porcealine of course) is too high for us at this time. http://www.marinestove.com/futurestoves.htm

Anyway, heat is nothing to mess around with while living aboard and cruising. Besides having to live in the dark (ie. battery failure and not having good back-up lanterns and tons of quality oil) nothing is more horrible than being wet and cold all the time. Go with two different methods if you can and then you are covered for mostly any condition.
