Sure, why not? Just know that it's going to be harder, and you're going to have to be a proportionately better sailor to pull it off, and getting caught in a near calm is something that's going to happen more often. If you really like the basic boat, it's a pretty simple matter to redraw a rig, and I'd offer to do it for anyone who needed it done at this point. If you find yourself a used mast, and there's a few to be had, and the boat in in need of new wire anyway, it's really not very hard to do.

At the very least, consider a bowsprit. If you've got a boat with a long boom, and a tendency to weather helm, and small fore triangle, like a lot of Alberg boats, as an example, it's a natural solution. For rules of thumb, I like the CE of the sailplan 20% ahead of CR, and the J length the same as the boom length.

You want to have positive lee helm in light air.
