Hello Darren

I'm in Adelaide, South Aus. and for 10 years I have been doing free research for people all around the world who want information about ancestors who came here in the 1800's. I saw your request re William Henry Bacchus in South Australia and decided to see if I could find any information which may be of some help to you. The following is what I managed to find:-

APPLICATION FOR FREE PASSAGE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Harriet Stirling, occupation servant of North Street, Chichester, England, single, aged 18 years applied for an application for free passage to South Australia on 27th January 1838. The application No. was 1843, and the disembarkation no.1045.

Harriett Stirling arrived in South Australia 24th June 1838 aboard the "EDEN" which sailed from Portsmouth, England.

William Henry Bacchus was born in Besley, Gloucestershire.

MARRIAGE.

Henry William Bacchus married 10th December 1838 in Trinity Church in Adelaide, South Australia.

Civil registration in South Australia did not commence officially until 1842, so anybody wanting to be baptised, married, or a funeral would go to Holy Trinity Church as that was the first Church to be established in Adelaide at the time.

BIRTH/BAPTISM

William Henry born 7th April 1838 son of William Henry Bacchus & Anne Bacchus, nee Stirling, who resided at Tiers. The baptism was performed by Reverend Charles Howard, who was the Colonial Chaplain at the time.

The Trinity Church is still in existence, and used quite regularly after all those years.

CHILDREN BORN TO WILLIAM HENRY BACCHUS & ANN STIRLING.

1. Annie Elizabeth born 27th July 1847 North Adelaide, District Adelaide. reference book 2 page 10.

2. Maria Jane born 9th June 1845 On the Torrens, District Adelaide reference book 1 page 116. (Mother's maiden surname spelt (Stelding)on this record.

I hope the above information is of some interest.

Please feel free to get back to me, at my email address, if there is anything else I can look up for you.

Regards
Heather
