I see what you're saying, but I think that dropping out of the Sen race so far in advance of the Pres election is just as bad as getting his ass kicked in the election. He loses all the visibility he gets being 3rd? 4th? ranking R in the Senate. Under the cover of what? Becoming the first guy at what's still going to be a very crowded party.

Only way he doesn't run is if W decides to make him the heir apparent and puts him in the cabinet somewhere.
