Subject: Babcock Ranch Hunting..Need your comments quickly

Hello folks - This message is to update you on our progress toward providing public hunting opportunities on Babcock Ranch Preserve (BRP). Over the past couple of months, FWC staff members have been working closely with BRP staff to set up wild hog hunts for the 2008-09 hunting season.

Under our current plans, FWC would issue special opportunity hunt permits, operate check stations, provide publications and maps, and manage hunts for this season. These hunts would occur on a portion of the BRP property that would have minimal impact on the current revenue generating operations of the ranch, yet provide quality habitat and sustainable game populations for public hunting. The area selected for these hunts comprises 16,612 acres on the northeast portion of the property (see attached map).

We are excited about offering public hunting opportunities on BRP, and we’re anxious to do so as soon as possible. It is important to note that, for many reasons, this property will not be managed like a typical wildlife management area. Rather, it is being managed under an approved management plan, which calls for generating revenues from recreational activities such as public hunting. For this reason, we are proposing a special-opportunity hunt format and fee structure.

To offer these special-opportunity hunts for the upcoming 2008-09 season, we are limited to working within the sideboards of existing FWC authority and fee structures. Current rules that establish fees for special opportunity hog hunts require a fee of $50 per day. We are recommending that six 3-day hunts be conducted Saturday - Monday, beginning in mid-November. The cost for these hunts would be $150 for a 3-day hunt. We are proposing that 30 permits be issued for each hunt (a total of 180 permits for all hunts). Scouting would be allowed after 8 a.m. on the day prior to each hunt (Friday). There would be no size or bag limit on wild hogs, but hunting hogs with dogs would not be allowed. Those individuals in possession of a special-opportunity permit would be allowed to bring one non-hunting guest. The proposed scout and hunt dates for 2008-09 would be as follows:

November 14 – 17
November 28 through December 1
December 12 – 15
December 26 – 29
January 9 – 12
January 23 – 26

We will continue to work with BRP to explore the options of implementing a full suite of public hunting opportunities for the 2009-10 season (including deer, turkey and small game). We look forward to any comments you may have on these proposals.
