>>Micromanaging never helps anything. It just adds confusion on top of everything else. If you think the regs are complicated now try understanding them when you have deer in Florida right now losing thier antlers in some areas and growing them in others. How about rutting, Everglades it's June on and in the Panhandle, January on. You can't set a reg for every situation. I think the current zones and regs are set up to minimize confusion and maximize participation.
No matter what anyones excuse is for no antler restrictions it boils down to not willing to make a sacrifice which I feel is a big problem totally in our great country today. But that is another story.
As far as all the big bucks being in North Fla.Well I guess it just depends on your opinion of what a big buck is. I have killed 100 inch deer 3 years in a row on a So. Fla. Mgt area, not a special opp area, and have game cam pics of a dozen more.100 inces is the minimum score for the buck registry so I use this number as a reference for a big buck.Florida will never be a mass producer of Boone & Crocket bucks no matter how balanced the deer herd, no matter how much you feed them or how old they get, it ain't gonna happen
In the Holeyland WMA in the Everglades region you could feed a deer all the protein it wanted and it would never be much over a hundred inches and 125 lb.But it will grow a multi point rack and after all it sounds a lot better to say i killed an 8pt than I killed a spike even if the 8 only had a 12" spread. But again 1 thing for sure is it will never be any bigger than it was on the day you killed it.
As far as doe harvest goes if you aren't gonna manage for quality bucks then you have to manage for quantity. The only way to do this is have no doe days on WMA's. The more does the more spikes people can kill and a few will always live long enough for those of us who like a challenge.
The public should always be allowed acess to Commission data.We all want to be armchair quarterbacksas it is always fun to secondguess those in charge.
Harvest reporting is a joke on alot of mgt. areas but I would rather have the commission spend the money on a controlled burn than worry about missing a deer or turkey being checked out. In this case it boils down to the hunter being ethical or greedy. If a few more of these game hogs got turned in then maybe it wouldn't be so prevalent and with the new enhanced penalties they would cetainly learn their lesson.
Lastly and i'll get off my soapbox, a controlled burn is way better than any foodplot you could plant for the variety and quality of food it produces not just for deer but all animals in the area. The state does not burn near enough of our mgt. areas.
Goodbye and Good Luck this SPRING.
