Date Posted: 19:15:47 09/02/05 Fri Ouch, careful, you heavy-handed boy! Or so the bay would had uttered had he the ability as the scowling young man jerked the lead a little harder than was mannerly. But the gelding did nothing more than flick his ears back in mild protest as he kept to the human's side. Where were they going anyway? Into strange pens, apparently, as the gelding followed where he was led, trusting enough to mind even the unfamiliar male at his head. Halter removed -again, with an unkind roughness- he shook his head, sending the short mane frizzing, and stepped quietly away from the human, scanning the area with a bright intelligence behind the warm dark eyes as the young man sat atop the fence near the gate to wait for buyers. ![]() *Somebody's Fortune* "Fortune" Standardbred gelding 15.2 h bay with tiny star and left hind sock 7 years old Bred and trained for the trotting races, the gelding was entering only in a few races to find out he lacked the speed to keep up with the winners. But lacking in speed is vastly different than lacking in heart and Fortune doesn't fall short in that area. He wants to please, wants to be a pocket pet, wants a human of his own to pamper him royally in return for hard and willing work. He is a gentleman for basic handling and grooming, though he doesn't fancy being clipped. After his short, pathetic, but injury-free racing career and a brief session of re-learning civilian manners, he found a quiet home with an elderly couple who enjoyed Sunday buggy rides with their newfound, faithful, and gentle steed. Issues of failing human health, however, sent the young horse to these pens to wait with bright eyes and attentive ears turning to each passing figure, hoping as much for an affectionate tousle of his forelock as much as a kind heart to take him home. He has worn English tack before in a couple of short training sessions, though he is yet to be backed. He is a willing student and reasonably level-headed and should quickly make an equally enjoyable riding horse as he is harness horse. Someday might make a good show horse, though for now noisy crowds remind him of his racing days and get him a little worked up, though not unmanageably so. With time and supervision, he would make a fine childrens' mount. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
