“You didn’t have to have Jason call me to see if I could talk to you, Adam,” Davenport sighed as he sat down on the back porch with Adam who was frowning. Davenport knew from everyone that it had been a very choppy week at school for Adam and he had hoped that this Monday would have been different. Clearly it wasn’t. “I still don’t know why you didn’t go out for baseball… you should be a practice or something.”
“Baseball was fun last year… but… not me,” Adam shook his head from side to side. “And I didn’t want to bother you and the doctor.”
Davenport chuckled. “The doctor, Ellie, is at work.”
Adam looked at Davenport and shrugged his shoulders. “Shouldn’t you be working?”
“Adam, I told you that you could come over here any time if you needed me. You could have just come over and knocked on the door. I was working on things at home… until your Dad and Nikita get home,” Davenport leaned back and opened up his pop. He had brought one for Adam that sat on the table but Adam didn’t seem interested in it. “Is this about Gretchen?”
“She’s a bitch,” Adam hissed as he shook his head from side to side. “She was hanging all over Brian Corchran today… and I heard what she was doing with Bill Farris on Friday night.”
Davenport leaned forward as Adam slightly turned to lean against the post of the porch’s stairs. “She is going thru the entire baseball team. It’s good that I’m not playing… it would be like Robbie all over again.”
“She is upset, Adam,” Davenport explained and Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t really even care… I wouldn’t care a damn bit about what Gretchen was doing if... well... if it didn’t…”
Then Adam grew quiet and turned his head away. Davenport took a sip of his pop to see if Adam would continue. But it was clear that he wasn’t.
“If it didn’t what?” Davenport inquired as he tried to be casual about this, but he already knew where this was going. All the adults figured this out.
“Gretchen told Lisa that for them to be friends… she didn’t want Lisa to be with me… as friends… at school or anything,” Adam spat as he reached for the can and opened it with a snap. “So Lisa ignores me all damn day and then wants to hide out either at my house or her house… she doesn’t want anyone to see us together… so Gretchen can handle it.”
Davenport shrugged his shoulders. “And you want to be more than friends with Lisa.”
“We are just friends,” Adam hissed as he glared at Davenport. “Why is everyone making it more than that? Lisa and I are friends. She is going to find someone else to date at some point and I am going to find someone else to date… and we are still going to be friends.”
“Then who are you interested in?”
“No one,” Adam rolled his eyes. “I just broke up with Gretchen and she is ruining my friendship with Lisa.”
“Maybe it is more than a friendship?” Davenport tried and Adam groaned. “Not you too.”
Davenport chuckled and leaned back. “What is the problem with what Lisa is doing? Maybe you all are too young and it’s best to lay low and not make the same mistake that Gretchen is doing.”
Adam took a long sip of his pop and placed it on the floor of the deck, looking out to the yard. Adam then got to his feet and moved to the bench that Davenport was sitting on. “It’s acting a lot like I did when I was being bullied. Gretchen is bullying Lisa into doing what she wants Lisa to do. I didn’t stand up to Robbie and his friends and I got beat up after dealing with a lot of shit…”
“Adam,” Davenport warned with the language and Adam seriously looked at Davenport with a look that told Davenport that Adam could have said something a lot worse. Adam looked at Davenport and shook his head. “I don’t care what you tell my dad and Nikita about what I said, Davenport. I’m calling it as I see it right now. But Lisa won’t listen to me.”
Davenport turned the can around in his hand and then rubbed a hand over his head. “There must be something that Lisa feels guilty about, Adam. She is doing this for a reason.”
“She is doing this for her friend… but Gretchen isn’t her friend. She is selfish and shallow… and a bully!” Adam declared as he was absolutely positive. He now moved to the bench that Davenport was sitting on and sighed. “Why can’t Lisa see this?”
Davenport shrugged his shoulders. “You are going to have to ask Lisa that.”
Adam groaned as and leaned his head back. “Now she doesn’t even want to spend time with me…”
“Because you want to talk about this,” Davenport guessed and Adam nodded his head up and down. “I try not to… but it just happens.”
“You care a lot about Lisa.”
“Look, she is my best friend,” Adam declared as he rolled his eyes at Davenport. “Why can’t people just accept that?”
“Sorry, Adam,” Davenport sighed. “It’s not easy when friends are opposite sexes.”
“No one questions that Nikita is your friend… or Mick is a friend with Nikita…” Adam pointed out and Davenport chuckled. “That’s because Nikita has your dad.”
“So I have to go date someone so I can be friends with Lisa again? That makes no sense,” Adam frowned and Davenport groaned. He took the pop out of Adam’s hand and stood up. “You need to do something new.”
“Really?” Adam questioned and Davenport nodded his head up and down. “You said that you always wanted to spar with me… still up to that?”
“My dad didn’t want us to do that…”
“I think right now, you need to do that,” Davenport spoke as he couldn’t take much more of this conversation. Adam was giving him a headache and the boy needed something physical to take his mind off of what was going on.
Because there was more than friendship between Adam and Lisa if either of them would be brave enough to admit to it.
“Don’t worry, Adam… I’ll take it easy on you…” Davenport chuckled and Adam stood up and huffed. “I think I’ll take it easy on you. Remember my dad taught me.”
“Sure,” Davenport nodded his head as he led the way to the garage, knowing that this was a first good step.
And hoped that Michael would understand this when he came home.
