'Say, Styx98.....

Wooooooo.....*sigh*...I dunno. See, I'm not sold on Larry. Yes, he's proved several times in the NBA that he can take a team from the garbage dump and turn them into a pretty decent team. But that's not the concern I have. Is it that he can win an NBA championship? That's yet a wholly different matter. He's never done it.

His backers will say he never had a powerhouse team to do it with. (True, the Sixers made the finals and lost to a powerful Laker team. No fault of Brown's. No other coach could have won that series.). His detractors will point pout that no first tier club ever offered him the opportunity. Maybe that's a pattern. Maybe he was contracted up at the time. Still....one wonders. He doesn't seem overly popular at the Sixer board. Reminds me of the old joke that Philly fans would boo an Easter egg hunt. heh. Not that Detroit fans are Casper Milquetoasts, for that matter. Especially Badboys1. Rumor has it he helped God create the world in a previous life.

They talk about his ability to teach. But others have pointed out that in 6 years with the Sixers he developed little in the way of young talent. Harpring ended up very good....but in Utah. Jerry Sloan is considered a fine coach and may have contributed to Matt's development too. Another poster had said, in effect...where are all the guys in the laegue who give Larry credit for teaching them the game?

Here's something that bothered me, Styx98.....at the Piston press conference Larry said he had no idea what his title was or his responsibilites were with Philly. Please! The man's making millions and doesn't know what his title is? Doesn't know his responsibilities? That's bull. I saw where Croce--a man I greatly respect--raked him over the coals for that.

Conversely.....Dumar's is nobody's fool. I would have to think that he talked with Larry and told him what he needed. Development of the young guys. Now maybe Larry--thinking of 25 mil ambling in his direction--gave Joe some jelly on his bread while thinking all the while that he'd just do things his way once he became coach. Remains to be seen how the whole thing plays out. Me, I would never in a zillion years have given the man that much money for 5 years. Makes me wonder if it might have been Davidson's idea? He's older than....well, I hear he was a hall monitor for Lincoln. Probably feels more comfortable with an old coach. Who knows? We gonna see. Thanks for the very nice response!
