One of the gals coming down for the pageant told me that the Koger Center is overbooked on rooms. I booked the minimum because I am financially responsible if we didn't get them filled. I personally cannot afford to pay for rooms that are not sold, I am a working woman with 2 kids.

There is a major 20 year high school reunion that same weekend, and they pushed us out of the smaller rooms but we HAVE secured the ballroom needed. For those who may be affected, there are multiple hotels within a mile or even less as this is our southside hotel district. Part of why I chose the venue.

I have to secure rooms for my judges (another problem I am looking into this weekend) and I will if I must, put them up at the hotel across the street. It's a nice one too and I'm going to check this out. This is a NEW development we have this other group coming in.

To those who may have room problems that are entering at the last minute, I will help you in every way possible. However, this is one of the drawbacks to waiting until just before the pageant to enter....we've had the site up since July with the venue.

email me if you have questions....

We don't have much time! I will be gone from March 27th thru April 4, so if you can contact me before that, that would be great! Hello again gals...thank all of you for your patience.

Mrs contestants...if you have not gotten them already, I have the scores and comments and will email all the info to you in the next few days. I have had to do my state queens first, to prepare them for nationals, and that has taken about an hour per queen each night this week. I am working hard on working with them on wardrobe ideas, phots and overall preparation. I am also still working full time until April 1st, about 50hrs a week. After that, we will start accepting 2006 contestants and making plans for next year including confirming a date ASAP.

We have decided to stay with the host hotel. Everyone seems to like it. I am going to book 20 rooms instead though at least.

Those of you who have had suggestions, I have read them and will carefully work on ones we can incorporate into next year. The backdrop on the stage was my fault, I didn't realize until that morning the service doors would be behind the reversed layout! Honest mistake. Hubby and I are considering building pipe/drape to use next year to dress up the stage...I know it needs work and we're going to continue to make things bigger and better to showcase our VA girls! Texas has about a 7 year lead on us but we'll catch up. :)

Just a word to everyone, if you have a question to me on what judges said, or what my opinion is, I will give my best effort to help you. But ultimately YOU are the one who must feel confident and believe in your own presentation. Our judges were very good about pointing out room for improvement but my suggestions, or theirs, are NOT the ONLY right way out there!

Don't feel if you don't win that you *must* change everything. Neither I nor they can tell you the magic formula. If I knew it, I'd have won every pageant I ever entered in the past 5 years! No one does that. Sometimes it's not anything you have done---different judges, different result. I lost for years before I started placing, and now winning, and it took that time to sort through the judge's comments and my OWN sense of who I was to come up with the right combination.

I don't play favorites....I want to see ALL my girls win. If not Galaxy, somewhere else down the line in another pageant. I am happy to help you with publicity, concerns or just general pageant questions. My job is to help our girls develop, both local and state queens, and to give a fair opportunity for each woman to win.

In the end, it is the *judges* who choose amongst you which woman that will wear the crown representing the goal you have all strived for. I am very proud of their choices but next year we will have new judges with new outlooks....and you will have a new journey, quite possibly with a better result, to becoming that winner.

Good luck ladies in your pageants....to Jennifer and Ashlee at Fredericksburg USA! See you soon.

The 2005 pageant went well and many thanks to Autumn for all of her hard work!

Congratulations to our new Virginia queens: Olivia, Shannon, Sharon and Joy. I am especially proud because I coached Olivia (Jr. Miss VA) and it was so fun to crown one of my friends, Joy, as my successor! I had 3 friends competing in the Mrs. division and it would have been an honor to crown any of them.

I had a great time meeting all of the ladies and hope that those who weren't crowned this time, will return next year.

I was honored that Autumn asked me to emcee AND awarded me the "Queen of Queens" title!

Best of luck to our new queens at the International competition and Charli, too!!!!

XOXO,
Darlene

HI LADIES...It is getting closer. I have some bad news, and I am having a *cow* in posting this.

My banner vendor apparently was out of town when I sent her the confirmation order and is now &$^@' telling me that she can't get the order together by Saturday delivery. Mind you I placed this the MORNING of the 2nd! And we had discussed and she had agreed she would supply these!!!

I am 100% upset and p'o'd about this but I can't do a thing about it. The banners may not make it in time. I am willing to pay extra for rush, etc, but that is not the problem. The problem is she didn't check her email like a businessperson should and did not give me a heads up so I could switch vendors in time. This constitutes one of our biggest orders of the year, so I am a bit mad to say the least.

This will affect our Supermodel winner, Our two Jr. MIss queens and girls who have not received their local banners yet. It will NOT affect the state crown winners as their banners are supplied by the national office and long since here. Unfortunately when I have people wanting last minute entry and wanting to pay entry fees at the VERY last minute, I have to place last minute orders waiting on those fees to come in and this sort of thing does happen.

To fix it, if we do not get our order here in time, I will personally mail each banner to each of you. The Supermodel and Jr. MIss queens will have makeshift banners (I will use my daughter's old one for crowning the jr. miss overall winner) and I will mail the proper ones out when they arrive.

On the plus side, the Supermodel crown, gift certificates and magazines are all here. Trophies will arrive tomorrow. All gifts for winners and runners up are here. I also have 5 judges coming, which is amazing given 3 of the ones secured last year cancelled with less than 2 weeks out. That on top of learning there isn't a hotel within 5 miles that's not sold out that weekend, so I was fortunate to find qualified judges all within the Virginia borders.

I guess if this is the worst thing that happens ladies, we're doing ok. The show will go on. But I wanted to let you all know about the snafu so there is no hard feelings or surprises when you get here. Everyone will receive what they are supposed to, it just may be a week later. :(

Onward and upward! Just a few days until our new queens are crowned....

(68.57.114.14)

Now that our numbers are locked down, it's time to post the things to remember for next weekend. If you have any last minute things, you can email or call me. I will not be going out of town on the 11th as previously planned as this flu has cancelled any trips for me for awhile. :( Ok, onto updates:

1.) I will need SIX 3-hole punched copies of your bio, brought to the pageant. 5 for judges, one for my emcee (Darlene) so she can easily talk about you while you do your gown walk. Don't worry about the year at the top of the bio sheets, the judges are looking at YOUR information. We'll redo for nationals should you win. There will be no discussion off your bio during fashion as this is a loud, high energy portion and modeling and outfit will be judged not only for the pageant, but for the Supermodel Award.

2.) The Supermodel Award WILL be bumped. This is my decision and it's final. This meaning the lady with the highest overall fashion score who does NOT win a state crown will be crowned our Supermodel. Obviously we will crown her last, after state queens, so that the surprise is not ruined as to who won state. This way I can give an extra title to a contestant who does a superior performance and I know all of the young ladies competing this year are good sports and will not begrudge our winner that opportunity. So if you do not win state, do NOT immediately leave because you could still win this title. I do want pics of my contestants and queens to feature all that you ladies have done to prepare & compete.

3.) Opening number is NOT judged. You will have 30 sec or less to introduce yourself in your black outfit and local banner, as follows:

Jr Miss: School/grade level, name and area title
Teen: School/grade level, name, and local title
Miss: Profession or school attended, name & local title
Mrs: Their Husband's name, children if they would like to mention them, and local title.

With the Mrs. I don't feel career is as important to mention onstage as the family. Plus some are homemakers and that's equally a career too. If they want to mention it on their bio, the judges will ask during interview.

4.) This year as we have about the same contestant numbers as before, we will have to announce *someone* as the 3rd runner up of 4 in one division, etc....there's no way to "creatively hide" placement in a pageant with smaller divisions. Though I hate announcing someone as placing so called "last" in a division, it is the reality of the matter until we start getting 5-6 or more per division (and $2 a gallon gas isn't helping that).

Therefore, I have ordered lovely marble based trophies for *EVERY* contestant engraved with her placement and the pageant year, etc and ALL of our contestants will receive gift bags as runners up. That is the UP side of small numbers. No one will go home empty handed and all of you will receive a discount for 2006.

Also, you all know I give scores, so it does not take a rocket surgeon to figure out who placed where if you compare notes. I figure it is better to be up front from the beginning. If judges write notes (and mine usually do! My state gals will confirm that!), those will go to you with the scores 2 weeks later. Bring a prepaid, preaddressed envelope to the pageant for this purpose. The queens overall score will be given out for comparison by division so you can see how you lined up against her. Last year, two divisions were determined by 5 points or less!

5.) I will be staggering the interview times a bit more this year, so the Mrs. won't be waiting around an hour like they were last year. So Teens will go 1st, then about 15 minutes later will be Miss and another 15 minutes or so will be lineup for Mrs. This will allow a little less waiting time so everyone can come down and back up in an orderly manner.

6.) I will be checking in around 3-4pm, if anyone WANTS TO EAT TOGETHER THAT NIGHT, I'm game with getting together a group. I can make reservations beforehand but I need an idea of numbers. If not, we'll all get in the car(s) and find a place like last year. Email me or post if you want to make a group "eat" of it and get to know one another more. It was a lot of fun last year for those who participated.

That's all for now. If you have questions, post here and I will do my best to help you!

Kudos for our Mrs. Virginia Beach Galaxy, and our reigning Jr. Miss Blue Ridge Galaxy....together we all helped raise about $4,000 in ticket sales for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge! It was COLD too...but for a good cause! It was worth it just to see the amazing costumes these plungers wear to go into the water! I will definitely be volunteering again next year with this worthwhile event.

Later that night, our own Miss VA, Katie Jones, placed 1st runner-up at the Miss Portsmouth Seawall pageant! She made an outstanding showing, placing just behind Jennifer Love, a now 5 time preliminary winner on her 5th trip to Miss VA, esp for being new to the MAO system. Several preliminaries will be coming up over the spring and we wish Katie the best of luck in her quest to become Miss America!

It's about a month away ladies...can you believe it??

The Mardi Gras Party for the Starlight Foundation will be held at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, Virginia 22042; 703-698-1110. Here's more info specifically about where to meet and park.

The party will be held at a conference room at Inova confirmed for Jan 29th from 12:30-5pm. The party will be from 1:30-3:30pm and it will be at the Physicians Conference Center. You would need to enter throught the Blue
entrance and park your cars at the Blue Garage and walk on over to the building (parking validation will be provided). You will drive past the Women's and Children's Building, past the garage to the red brick building. Park in the Blue Garage. We will provide you with parking validation. Look for the party for the Sickle Cell Anemia patients and their families.

We will be making masks with the children. So, it will be a little messy and you WILL get white glue on you! So, don't wear any clothes that are not washable. Also, please wear any Mardi Gras colors of green, gold, and/or purple.

Please arrive as close to 12:30 as possible so that we can get all of the crafts, food, decorations, etc. laid out so that we are ready when the kids arrive. Right now, we are expecting 25 children. Please remember to wear purple, gold or green (MG colors) if you have it. You will not be able to use your cell phone inside the hospital and it will be difficult to find the event if you do not travel with the group!

Thank you so much and I hope to see some of my Galaxy Sisters there!!!

Hey to all Galaxy Ladies! As some of you are already aware, we have the annual Polar Plunge coming up, here in Virginia Beach. It's an awesome winter festival type event to raise great $$ for Special Olympics. We had signed up to volunteer, then thought it would be great to make this a group volunteer/appearance opportunity! I do not have all the details still...but here's what I do know:
When? Saturday, Feb 5th. Events start 10am, actual 'Plunge' is at 2:30pm.
Where? Ocean Front!! between 6th & 9th Streets.

What I am thinking is that if we have a group of 'Royal' volunteers, it will be great fun, we could be helping on the beach itself, with registration, t shirts, I'm not sure. As volunteers, wherever is needed. Should be great photo opp though!
I am thinking for now that most of you would be able to drive down Saturday morning...would be about 2 hrs from Richmond to give perspective to those not used to the drive.

I will post additional details as soon as they update me. In the meantime, would love an idea of about how many would be able to make it? Tentative number at least, maybe we can have some extra fun while everyone's here!

(68.57.114.14)

Hello ladies! More and more are arriving as the deadline nears. I am hoping to have 20 this year...let's keep our fingers crossed!

Some Frequently Asked Questions:

1.) Should I wear a 1pc or a 2pc?
ANSWER: I will be 100% honest here. If you have the body to get away with a 2pc, then you probably should wear one if you feel confident in it. The judges are not instructed to score higher either way, but experience at nationals has shown, esp with Miss and Teen, 2pc swimsuit often score higher. For Mrs I do not think this is as important. However, that being said, if you have great legs and a less than tight midsection, you may look more competitive in a 1pc and actually score higher. It all depends on your fitness level, comfort level, and division. Judges are honestly more likely to look for a 1pc on a Mrs at 34 with 2 kids than with a Teen who is 16 without that offset.

2.) What qualifies me to compete in VA?
ANSWER: As listed on the Requirements page, owning property, residing, attending school or working in VA OR DC will qualify you. I have been honest up front about this. You must qualify, however once you do, you do. Appearances will be expected of whoever wins, on behalf of a Virginia title.

3.) What kind of Fashion should I wear?
ANSWER: Think RAVE, CACHE, H&M, BODY CENTRAL....cute and trendy, flowing and feminine. Short is ok, we know it's not summertime but it's an indoor pageant. We will not have the judges take off for what might otherwise be considered sexy, even on teens HOWEVER do not pick something provacative. One is pretty and flirty and the other is inappropriate. Fit and figure will be considered, meaning if you are a little larger don't wear a miniskirt with boots and a belly shirt. But no matter how good your figure is, use good taste! If you do not know the difference or are questioning an outfits appropriateness, please email me and I will explain to prevent you losing points!

4.) Can I wear hose with the swimsuit?
ANSWER: You can. Some judges however do not like hose. I leave this up to their individual taste because you will find at nationals it is the same way. Most do not wear hose however. Sally Hensen makes a spray on leg tan that hides everything under the sun. Just remove before gown time.

5.) What kind of shoes do you recommend with gown?
ANSWER: Clear ones are always good. French pedicures on the toes do really well when your toes are sticking out from the acrylic shoes. You can do one at home.

If you have other questions, please post here! I'll try to answer all I can within reason, about every 2nd day or so. Good luck!

You could send a card, letter, autograph pic or anything to me and I will send several packages to the soldiers names that I have so far. As of today(Tuesday)I have four names. I get a name and address everyday M-F. If you would like to be apart of this please send me an email at: missusofa2004@yahoo.com and I will give my address, as I can not give out their address'.
Thanks so much

In reviewing our pageant against last year, I am considering getting rid of the program book and ad requirement.

If we do so, I can focus more on the stage decorations, the judges and prize packages for our runners up and delegates. The ad book is a BIG chunk of time to compile and assemble and to be honest, you always end up with someone who is not happy with the result.

We are considering removing the requirement and booklet and dropping the price of the pageant down another $50 for the Teen/Miss/Mrs divisions. I can still assemble a passout for the contest listing who is who and sponsors, and we can of course recognize your sponsors online once photos and such are up past the deadline. I honestly think our queens, whoever they end up, should concentrate their ads at the NATIONAL level, where the most impact is felt.

What is everyone's opinion on this? Would you prefer a discount and just go without the program book at state? Please let us know!

Today I confirmed with our host hotel that we not only have BOTH the ballrooms (a&b) for our pageant, giving us TWICE the audience and stage area, but that I have 10 rooms for the pageant discount of $79 for that Saturday night coming down! I am excited about that because it keeps the costs down for our contestants. Usually the Holiday Inn is pretty reasonable about a hr or so late checkout, however we will be scheduling rehearsal time MUCH earlier and a little longer than last year....so no one will have to leave to go get their stuff out at the last minute, etc. If I need MORE hotel rooms, I will try to negotiate that, but EVERYONE CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO ENTER and then expect to get a room. But I will help all of you in any way I can to find overflow, just as we did last year, once those 10 are gone. I may bump it up to 15 or 20 if we can justify those numbers (judge's rooms are not in that number).

ALSO, I have a full SEPARATE dressing room, with door that you can bring your items down to (just gowns, not all the luggage!) to prepare for the pageant. I rented the York conference room, which holds about 50, so it should be about right for our girls and their goodies needed.

Don't forget to call the hotel if you plan on competing and to forward your 50%, I have a banner order going in very soon.

For the 2nd time, a Virginia gal has accepted the US title....Charli our Teen Miss Virginia will be returning to Galaxy in 2005 as Miss US Teen Galaxy after she gives up her title this coming spring.

We wish her the very best of luck in her new title as she paves the way for her Miss Teen Virginia successor soon to come in March next year!

An interesting fact: all the Teen/Miss/Mrs Virginia titleholders have always made the cut at Galaxy. We will continue to hope for an unbroken trend in 2005!:

Mrs. VA 02, Maria Beall--Mrs. Galaxy 2003
Miss VA 02, Autumn-Skye Port--Miss US 03-4th r/u nationals
Mrs. VA 04, Darlene Deeben--3rd r/u nationals
Miss VA 04, Katie Jones--Top 8 Semi-finalist
Teen Miss VA 04 Charli Hathcox--Miss Teen US 05 & 1st r/u nationals
Teen Miss Loudoun Co 04, Ashlee Deeben--Top 8 Semi-finalist
Miss No. VA 04, Radiah Hyatte--2nd r/u nationals

Between those 7, Virginia girls have won every national category but one, including Interview, Fashion, Onstage Question, Swimsuit and Gown. The only award we have not won at nationals is Photogenic! And that's only because we need to get someone like Clay Spann to move a little closer to us.... ;)

Hi Virginia Galaxy Girls!
I'm thinking about entering the Ohio prelim this fall and was just wondering about a few things. This will be my first pageant as a Mrs. so I was wondering if you could tell me what types of questions are asked in interview of the married ladies? I just ordered the interview CD from Lori's website, so hopefully that will help! I guess I'm just looking for any insight from those of you that have competed in the Virgina prelim...thanks & best of luck to the Virginia gals @ the International finals this weekend!

Hello again ladies!

I have applications from many of you returning...and we have some awesome changes in the works for 2005! One thing I investigated concerns holding the Central Virginia prelims as a local, with the state fee paid for the winners. If you are *already* securing a title as a local queen, then come and attend as guest royalty and help crown, etc! I of course will be inviting our 3 VA queens and our darling Jr. Miss gal Mackenley to assist.

This would be a very informal pageant, I have found a local hotel conference room (different place, about a mile away) that is just the right size for about 10-12 contestants and some visitors. I am looking at Oct or Nov possibly? I need positive feedback on this from those interested in competing or who have done my state one already.

The winners would recieve the new local banner style (same lettering as state was..), a preliminary crown similar to the TX ones, a trophy or plaque and their state fees paid, plus the Central Virginia titles. I am thinking of setting the fee for the pageant at $150, but we must have a minimum of FIVE contestants in all 3 divisions combined to make it break even. So I will be taking prepaid entries, with door entries being $199 and only if we have space. Prepaid comes 1st.

All contestants who don't win will receive a $50 credit towards state entry fees, so you get some of it back if you decide to enter state afterwards. It will probably be ONLY gown and onstage interview, as we do not have a dressing room if we do a quickie pageant, but hey...you'll have time to prepare for swimsuit before you to go to state anyway...

Your thoughts gals?

(68.57.114.14)

Hi ladies...I received an email today that very politely asked why we were raising the entry fee? Since I am very open and forthright about how the business is run, I am sharing my answer with everyone, in case y'all are wondering that same thing.

For one thing, it appears I will have a dentist sponsoring some nice prizes (possibly whitening or even veneers? ...we're working it out! ) I am finalizing that, he is mailing a packet. This individual has done work for MANY Miss USA state queens. It would be AWESOME to secure this opportunity and give our girls another edge at nationals.

The Galaxy national entry fee is $1050 now. I think everyone's aware it keeps going up as the pageant lengthens and prizes are added. It's a LOT bigger than when I did it!

Also, I hope to provide the winner's with their required "photo shoot" swimsuits as part of the prize package. That alone is an extra $300 expense. If I had the notice (I learned this requirement 2wks or so ago), I would have provided this. I am trying to minimize our winner's last minute expenses. The only thing I cannot provide is photos, and everyone's very individual on that.

Our venue will be more expensive next year as the location was too small without an additional dressing room, which we needed. I want to open it up to BOTH ballrooms so more people can attend and sit comfortably. Plus more rehearsal room!

Also, we're INCLUDING the full page ad into the fee. It will make it easier for me to format, to give you guys more space and prevent some of the snafus I faced this year splitting up pages so much. So when you compare $495 plus $40 ad in 2004 vs $595, ad included, in 2005--it's only a $60 increase. Your $50 application fee is still counted TOWARDS not separate, your total. And the returning girls will not even have to absorb that much of it.

The cost increase will not affect the 2004 contestants, as they are all receiving a compensatory discount ($100 off....I am extending that to our 3rd/4th runners up also) to return. One of the benefits they got for being in it our very first year. I think that should be recognized.

Last but not least, I intend to make a profit this coming year. It doesn't have to be enough to quit my day job yet, but we broke even within $50 this year. Good for a 1st year pageant, definitely, but not exactly the return I'm looking for for an entire year of planning! And that's what's going into it, even now. We are trying to secure a March date at the same hotel this coming week.

Hope this helps explain it! I think you will all be delighted with the changes & expansion.

One thing I had never asked was about make-up and hair for the jrs. I emailed you the other day but tonight just scouting around I found your site here.
We have done only a few different systems and not sure what to expect. I know they only do on stage question and gown. I am thinking more about how to do hair and her make up.

It's been 3 hrs of sleep a night over here! But I'm EXCITED! I too can't believe it's almost time. I wish I had more. Some updates, since I can't post them all on the site (space):

CD is almost complete. Some of the music you can expect:
Fashion:
Toxic/Brittany spears, Jenny from the Block/J-Lo, Lucky Ones/Loverboy
Swimsuit: Soaking up the Sun, Walking on the Sun and Kokomo
Gown: From this Moment/Shania Twain (my wedding song!), Titanic/Celine Dion, I hope you Dance/Lee Ann Womack, One in a Million.

SOMEBODY'S GETTING CROWNED TO "A MOMENT LIKE THIS!" I WAS CROWNED TO THAT AT DELMARVA, I *STILL* CRY WHEN I HEAR IT! LOL! Also have Venus by Bananarama.

I'm listening to the music right now, I think it will make the production really cool. I'm learning as I go.

We'll be giving you a copy of EXACTLY what the judges use as the scoresheet. Scores available 2 weeks after pageant, we have a computer/Excel program and an auditor. His dad runs a CPA firm he helps out with. All originals will be kept and double checked too.

We just secured two more items for the goodies all will get. Since everyone will have a bag for placement....I added 3rd/4th r/u plaques and small bags for Miss...I'll be placing the gifts in those. So when you go home, no matter how you do, you won't go home empty. I wish I could crown ALL of you. I am so proud of how beautiful and nice everyone is. I have seen many bios and applications and I am amazed. I know I'm going to be crying next Sunday that I can't! If my 3 don't win nationals, well they should!

And if one, or more, does, we will crown the 1st r/u. It may break me (it's like $300) but we'll get you the crown & banner and work like crazy to promote you both. I will be proud to do so.

That's it for now. See you guys soon!

We're coming up on the deadline. I have received some last minute contacts and we may be adding 2 or 3 other girls and some Jr. Misses (yeah!) at the end. So it looks like we will break even and have a very nice small pageant which we hope will be a wonderful experience for *everyone*.

I just got back from buying some more items for our gift baskets for our courts (hey, the queens can't get all the fun now!) and I'm working on some little nice things for all contestants just for a "welcome" type of thing. Unfortunately I can only crown 3 Galaxy queens, but my goal is for everyone who participates to want to return again and to hold this time in their memories as a pleasant experience, even if not the right time for the crown quite yet.

I competed six years before winning much of anything. So I personally know what it's like to try again & again. How the director/staff made me feel was what made up my mind to return, not whether I placed runner up or didn't even make semi's. I've done both. Galaxy made two wonderful years for me, even coming home with the US crown rather than the Grand one I wanted so much.

Next year we most likely will hold the event at a local school that presents a much better auditorium, full lighting & sound system and a true large stage. I plan on keeping the entry fee the same or no more than a $50 increase. All contestants will receive a discount to return that would more than offset that.

I plan to get more sponsors (i.e prizes!) with time, and the appearances you do help me to get that visibiity going. My 3 queens will be instrumental in that too. A special thank you to several of the young ladies who have been able to do this. You know who you are.

Also, we will not be posting names or pics next year, only titles represented. I feel this is a better option because I want you guys to come to compete because you WANT to win. I don't want you dropping out thinking you CANT because so-and-so is there. I've surprised myself before both ways and you can't second guess yourselves. Maria & I can both testify to that.

I will be passing out a questionnaire at the pageant. I don't want it back until after you go home. Make suggestions for next year and for your local sisters who will be coming in. Don't sign your name, just mail it. I don't need to know who, just what. Make this a great pageant, you are the first queens we will have in Virginia but I have no doubt, certainly not the last....

Final numbers to be posted soon, around March 9th or 10th.

It was recently suggested to me that the ladies competing may want a H/M person available (for a fee, she does charge) at the pageant. A person locally has been suggested to me, I am trying to find out if she has pageant experience, etc. My question is this:

Does anyone want to consider this option? I prefer to do my own in my pageants, but many people haven't been doing this for 9+ years either. I want all my contestants to feel as comfortable as possible. I am currently trying to secure a dressing area separate of the ballroom (we have two, so we could easily cordon off an area if need be...) if more contestants come in near the deadline. I also know some don't like H/M people because if they don't win, they will fuss (I've seen it happen, and I've done it myself!).

So, what are your feelings on this? She would need 5-6 to confirm. Right now just an email to me will suffice to get an idea, but I would like some discussion on the subject as I plan for next year. This is a trial year, so what works we'll keep doing, and we'll keep looking to make it more "contestant friendly". Any thoughts?

Howdy Galaxy Girls!

I wanted you all to be among the first to know that I just got a call from MTV and I am going to be a pageant coach on their show MADE!!! I am super excited about this, after three interviews, they called this morning and offered it to me! I will be helping a girl named Kitty get ready for her local Lion's club pageant in my home town of San Antonio! We begin filming mid-January and the finale, her pageant, is Feb.21 in San Antonio.

Unfortunately this means that I will no longer be able to participate in the Mardi-Gras parade in New Orleans that weekend as planned, but this is such a wonderful opportunity and the exposure for the Galaxy pageant is just going to be incredible, I can't pass this up! I will, however, miss seeing all of you at the parade.
I will keep you all posted! :) Happy New Year!
Lots of Galaxy Love,

and you are a current Galaxy delegate in VA, I am posting these on the Contestants pages if submitted. I'll be putting one up soon for one of our Mrs. contestants and if any of the rest of you have a website (personal, not the hubby's business or yours..), I will be happy to link it for you.

Also to those coming in over the next two months, this applies to all the delegates.

Don't forget the deadline is March 1st. It's not too far away.....

We will be awarding TWO appearance awards....one for most total and one for the most in the amount of time of title held (so later entrants have an opportunity also). These will receive not only plaques but nice little gift items and a discount to return if they are not the winning contestant!

There is an appearance record sheet on the Application page. It is labeled "Visibility Award". It is to help you keep track of appearances. PLEASE send me pics! I will shameless promote you gals in return. I know firsthand as a titleholder myself how hard you have to work to book these things. We will continue to post photos and additional pages if necessary on the website.

Some appearances you can consider are judging other pageants, collecting clothes for donation for your Goodwill, sponsoring an Angel Tree child (I did this just this week for Mrs. Delmarva) and dropping off your donation....they will be happy to let you take a photo in sash by the tree in exchange for sponsoring a child's Christmas!...toys for tots, parades. In the spring we will have Veterans' visits in Feb and there are a lot of walks and relays. Speaking to school children or volunteering with a charity, visiting the elderly or hospitals. All of these count.

Enjoy your year, it is GREAT preparation should you win state and even possibly the Galaxy crown itself!

Thanks to Mrs. Northern VA Christy Bell for the info on this:

Miss Arlington pageant is at the Washington-Lee High School on 12/13/03 at 7pm. Apparently the director WILL let us wear our banners! Door cost is $12 per person.

A prospective contestant, candice, has contacted me about Galaxy and will be competing at Miss Arlington. I am attending, as is Maria and Christy. Let's be sure to give her our support! If any of you are attending and have a friend competing, let us know! We'll be sure to encourage the young ladies vying for this Miss America preliminary title. :)

If you guys have any other info to contribute, please post it here. Also, if you have an upcoming appearance between now and March, please post! Let's get the word out about Galaxy and show everyone the queens we have are the BEST!

Subject: Referral questions...

Author:
Va Director

Recently several different contestants have mentioned about referrals and handing out brochures, doing appearances and spreading the word about Galaxy. Just so everyone knows, we do want to reward those contestants who *recruit* for the upcoming pageant. It does not have to be in your own division either, so that if you have a sister, friend or just someone you know who wants to enter the pageant, we will offer the referring queen a bonus for doing so.

The question here is how to administer bonuses, i.e. if it should be a hostess award (with banner & crown) of it's own, a discount towards the fee to return the next year, or free advertisement in the book. Some have mentioned a discount off their entry fee.....this year's....and I am totally willing to consider that but there is a problem with implimenting that this 1st year. For the bonus to apply (whether points or discount), the referree has to send in HER complete entry fee. Everyone however has the same deadline, March 1st. So it's impossible to discount your fee before knowing if your referral paid theirs, etc. I could try doing a refund (??) of credit, ie. if you referred 3 who actually paid in full and you've already paid, you get say $25 or $50 each back after the deadline sent back to you.

I am open to suggestions on how contestants who are currently in the Galaxy system who are interested in possibly recruiting other queens with them would like to be rewarded. I think discount off the fees is a good idea but we have to balance that with confirmation of entry. I may decide to only require 50% from your referee for your discount to apply prior to March.....that's been suggested as well.

For those who have competed before or have suggestions, what do you think would be the fairest and best incentives?? I am new to the referral idea but I think it would be good for everyone......please post your ideas gals!

well, we went with it! I am hosting an online preliminary photo contest for one state entry for a teen, a miss and a mrs. VA Galaxy contestant winner. We must have 3 to hold the preliminary, if we get less we'll extend that division until 3 are received.

One headshot (no crown/banner) and one essay question are required. Scored equally, 50/50 beauty and interview. $50 to enter, all entrants will receive the ad requirement free if they choose to enter the state pageant if they do not win their state entry. So you can't lose!

Visit the What's New page for the link if you're curious and good luck to any potential contestants who had thought about entering but weren't sure. Here's an opportunity to do so at little cost. Good luck to all!

After reading over the Judging requirements and such...I was wondering if you will be adding a fourth and fifth runner-up like nationals or just keep it at the top three? If there are at least five contestants will you be considering adding fourth and fifth places? Just something I was wanting to throw out there.
