Subject: What about an online Central Virginia prelim???

Ok, here's a question for all who visit this board. I am now working full time again as an insurance adjuster. An offer was made to me that I could not refuse that allows me to be home in time for my daughter from school so I accepted, since my family comes first. I of course will continue to run this pageant and still hope to grow it into a true full-time job of it's own!

Lori as many of you may know is running an online photo contest for her Teen contestants for a national entry fee. I have the option of doing this with the reserved Central Virginia titles for Teen/Miss/Mrs. I am considering doing an online vs. live prelim this first year due to my job time constraints and my own competition schedule.

I was thinking $50 to enter would be fair, and each entrant would receive her ad requirement free (1/4 page-$40) if she does not win, so she doesn't really lose the money if she still wants to enter the pageant. Same as Early Bird pretty much. We would judge based on photogenic entry (50%) and short essay answer (50%) to why they want to be "Teen/Miss/Mrs. Central Virginia". So interview and looks have an equal shot. Pretty basic.

As to those who have already entered, you will all have a BIG advantage making appearances towards the optional visibility awards that the prelim winners will not, since they wouldn't be announced til right before Christmas or so. So there's pro and con, but there's still an advantage to reserving the title you want to have rather than waiting if you want to go ahead and start representing your local area & securing sponsors, etc.

Does anyone have any input on this? I will be making a final decision soon, any suggestions?

Just a general update about the banners.....my vendor is out of state and she does a lot of good work for us. Some potential contestants have asked me what the turn around time is and what they look like.

Be aware a lot of pageants do not even give you a local title or banner! So this is a very good bonus that the Galaxy system allows for this. Most systems in VA do not. Also, there is a local crown but it is $90 and you must order it directly from Lori's vendor. I do not provide these as the cost is prohibitive with a $495 entry fee.

It takes about 30 days to get your banner once you confirm (pay) the 50% of your total entry fee. Banners are ordered at the end of each month together to condense shipping costs from the midwest. They are bridal white satin with black satin borders and chain-stitched black cursive embroidery. They are easily the equal of many state banners I have seen.

Due to the amount of time it takes to get the order processed and back to me, do not book an appearance as a Galaxy queen until you get your banner! I have no way to predict if orders will come early or late and getting them directly shipped to contestants is not working out properly. So please take this into account. If you have an appearance in mind in the next month or so and you'd like to book as a Galaxy queen.....get the entry fee in to get your banner ordered. That's the simplest way to make the process go faster.

If you would like to see an example of the banners, we have some photos of Christy wearing hers on the appearances page. Also, more photos are coming from our other new queens! So check it out and see what you think!

For those of you who might not know, I have added an "Appearances" page on our site as well. As the ladies receive their banners, I encourage you all to email me your out-and-about pics from any activity that you are using your banner at.

This can be judging or even attending other pageants, charity functions, helping with fundraisers, working a booth, etc. If you just want to take a nice photo in the banner, that's fine too (it does not give you an appearance point however for Visibility..)----take a digital in the house and we'll post it to show everyone what you look like representing your title. It doesn't have to be pro, it can be a snapshot.

These photos aren't judged after all. They're to recognize our queens as they go out and promote their title and themselves preparing for the responsibilities that will accompany the state title.

If you have any suggestions about the appearance page, drop me a line! I will do whatever I can to help or give you tips in this area.

For the winners of our VA pageant, what will happen if they wanted to compete for the Visibility award at the national pageant? Do you think Lori would count VA appearances, since our pageant is so close to the deadline. I think it would be sort of impossible for the winners to do enough appearances to count in one month? Just a thought I had....

As it is my policy to try to answer *any* delegate's questions publically to everyone who is competing or considering it, I wanted to let everyone know that if a mother/daughter team enters.....such as we have had with our new Mrs. Loudoun County & Teen Loudoun County queens...yes, a discount is offered if *both* compete. However the 50% confirmation remains the same to reserve the title for the banner to be ordered, etc.

The offer I made them and will honor to any other mother/daughter or sister team entering Galaxy is $100 off each state entry, i.e. $395 each for both. This applies ONLY to the Galaxy main pageant divisions! If you have a daughter entering Jr. Miss or the Ms. Heart of Virginia pageant is involved as one of the entries, those questions will be handled on an "as-arising" basis and smaller discounts would of course be involved due to smaller entry fees.

We strive to be above-board in all we do and encourage others who may find themselves in that situation to enjoy the same discount if it applies. As always, if you have a question about whether or not something qualifies, email me! We will try to help answer any confusion or questions you may have and post the info for everyone to benefit from those questions.

Hello ladies!.....I wanted to know if anyone had ordered merchandise from the Cafe Press shop which has the official Virginia Galaxy items on it. If you have, let me know how they look, any feedback, etc.

I don't want to *require* everyone to wear the t-shirt for rehearsals if people don't like the logo, but it do think it would be really neat to have a group photo shot of our gals in their local banners with the same shirts on. This would make an awesome pic for everyone to have as a group and we do send our pictures to the national pageant as well as posting them on the website for next year. How do you ladies feel about this?

BTW, Lori said if we want to do rehearsal in the official Virginia shirts, our 3 *winners* CAN wear this shirt for the sightseeing/events required at nationals in lieu of the national Galaxy shirt....unless they want to buy both. So that way if you do win, you will not be out the $ to have to get another shirt.

What's the general consensus on this? Do you all like that idea or do you resent having to buy a shirt in addition to the wardrobe you already have to have to compete in pageants? I do think it would be helpful to wear to appearances (my 2002 Galaxy shirt is very soft and faded now!) but I am curious for input. Thanks!

Here is Lori's (our national director)reply to Laura's question, for everyone's info:

Hi Autumn,

I'm sure we can work something out. But you are right - it will be tight. They would need to enter almost immediately after your state pageant. As time goes by, we all will get things coordinated a bit better. I probably should move the deadline back a bit for state pageants.....the
best thing would be have the state pageants in the summer or fall....It all depends on when the director comes on board.

Anyway....tell them they won't be shut out but it will be tight. Since you have a crown that could be used for photos, you are right, they could borrow it and that could work.....Lori

Based on this issue, how do you guys in general feel about the 2005 pageant (or any pageant you enter for that matter) being held in the fall of 2004 instead of hosting a pageant in the spring? It would cause a short year for our queens but on the other hand, could help prepare the next set with more time. Any feelings on this?

Autumn Skye-

I had a question about the delegate handbook. Lori said on the message board that the contestants were being sent a handbook. Are state directors being mailed handbooks for their upcoming winners too? Since our pageant is so close to the deadline, it would be nice for you to have them to give to the winners at the pageant, wouldn't it? Hopefully she will send them to you...Just a thought, since the deadline seems to be a discussion lately.

I saw your “what’s new” page and noticed that you said the deadline for the national pageant is a week after our state one…..I checked on the national website today and the deadline for the photos is May 1st…….the actual deadline to enter the pageant is April 1st…..3 weeks before we even have the state competition, so there would be no way we could enter it if we don't win state? It says under the rules, “no exceptions”…..would this still hold?
