Subject: PG gouging its base again

First it was the glossy throwaway magazines, then no print edition on three holidays, now this.

A letter from the PG came with today's home delivered edition. Buried in the middle of the second (back) page is a lengthy bullet point headed, "Holiday & Bonus days". The upshot is that seven-day subscribers--the foundation of the PG's circulation--will be charged "up to" $30 extra each year for 15 "holiday and bonus editions" ($2 each).

There is no explanation about what a "bonus edition" constitutes, although it looks like they're charging extra for the privilege of receiving piles of advertising circulars, judging by the list of "holiday & bonus days", which includes President's Day, "Good Friday" (for all of you Catholic PG readers), May 27 AND May 31 (!), Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

Some publications have been doing things like jacking up the turkey day edition, which makes casual buyers pay a fair price for cherry-picking. Fair enough. Good idea.

But it flies in the face of logic to try to convert single-copy buyers to loyal subscribers, only to ding them with a series of indignities -- magazines, no-print days and now this.

Basically, it's all a disincentive to buying the print product at all. Good business model.

This is what they are trying to do: force their customers to embrace digital so the PG/BCI can save money. It's why they desperately are trying to fill the Deputy Managing Editor's slot after their great digital heroine decamped to PublicSource.

In the world of Block, the only viable PG is an all digital edition. It may not be very good, but it'll be the only game in town. Their attitude: suck it up, Yinzers. Look at what we give you: sports, the Digs, Beer Me, Power Source and a Sunday Shribman column. You should be thanking us for even giving you a chance to pay extra for holiday print! You might want to bow or curtsey!

Not me.

[> PAY US! Or we'll go under! -- Loyal Order Of The Bow Tie, 20:14:26 07/28/16 Thu [1]

Recipients of this contemptuous, despicable little "letter" might consider sending it back via snail mail and adding a rather detailed and graphic suggestion as to where the Block Twins might wish to relocate One of America's Fastest Dying Newspapers. You might want to spell it out in detail. These two overprivileged heirs may not quite understand how the proletariat speak or think.

Yes! Of course the point is to sell you advertising inserts! For $2!! And those bonus editions will be printed in the days before delivery, and therefore will be very short on any actual news.
Haven't the Block Twins already taught us we can do without One of America's Increasingly Irrelelvant Newspapers on holidays? Or, at least, that the miserable Tribune-Review is a completely adequate substitute?
I'm afraid your suggestion to relocate their product would fail, based on their confusion with a hole in the ground, not to mention their being unable to distinguish it from shinola in the first place.

Maybe JR Block can endear himself by donning the guise of his doppelganger Stephen Colbert. He can do TV and print ads claiming he's Colbert's Second Cousin, maybe add a spinning bowtie to make himself seem strange enough. He could offer his BS deals to subscribers and people would just laugh and consider the source. Of course, most readers do that now.

Thirty dollars would be a reasonable and realistic price for a year's subscription.

Totally serious when I ask this, but isn't this against the law? At least a state law?

[> DON'T YOU GET IT? -- Byte Marx, 23:41:57 08/01/16 Mon [1]

All this is aimed at one thing: pushing readers to drop print and embrace the wonderful world of Digital. The geniuses who spent large on presses in Clinton now want you to forego paper and get it online, on your PC, smartphone and pads. Old, print-loving farts, they feel, can pay more for the joy of getting paper if they can still get home delivery.

Not so clear: what happens if a large segment of that demo respond with, "Kiss my ass and cancel my subscription!"
