Surprised at the vitriol aimed at CP and Charlie here. First, who in Pittsburgh media could capably write about the two daily newspapers' plight who hasn't worked at one or both of them? That's a tricky conflict of interest that could look like someone grinding an axe if handled badly. Legitimately looking for an answer to that question.

Second, CP has its own troubles. Its new owner is about as far right as a publisher can get, which has to mean constant internal battles over coverage. And word has it he isn't exactly showering the CP staff with cash and prizes. The stringer budget is likely what it's always been: Small. Who wants to risk their potential future career options in Pittsburgh's tiny media circles by writing a critical piece for which they likely won't be paid all that much?

I know everyone on this board likes to lionize Chris Potter, but it seems to me that Charlie's been trying to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic since Potter sold out and went to the PG (and yes, "sold out" is exactly the right term). The fact that CP still exists as an alt-weekly at all is pretty remarkable.
