To me they were not a replacement and it will never be. Like above posts, a PC (laptop) with a full 14+ inch screen can never been replaced by any PDA when you need to work on a word/excel/powerpoint file (say 50-200K in size, which is very normal nowadays). I am a student, and I use the Document to Go on the PDA, along with a fold away keyboard. I go to class and type the lectures as the teacher ramble on. I also use Excel for formulas as needed. Now that I have one of those fold-out keyboards for my Palm, I never use a full-sized computer at all anymore; I just type on my Treo while out, with the same speed I could do on a laptop. 2) Did I mention that I'm an *unemployed* travel writer? I'm so poor, in fact, that my home computer is still a 15-year-old Mac Centris, if you can believe that. Needless to say, I have no home internet access, and since I don't have a day job I don't have work access either; so I literally do all my online interaction (emails, web surfing, downloading, etc) through my Treo, not through a full-sized computer. 3) I also update and maintain one of my blogs ( http://ilikejason.blogspot.com ) exclusively through my Treo, using a program called mo:Blog (which actually isn't very good, which is why I'm not running their URL nor recommending it - it's just the only one I've been able to find thus far, unfortunately). My friends think I must be Palm's best friend, since I use mine in such a pervasive way; on the contrary, I warn them, I'm one of those high-end users who's endlessly finicky about my device, and I'm sure someone PalmOne wishes would just go away. If you need to do graphic editing, or if you have to run software exclusively designed for PC, there is no way around a laptop. For writing, mail/internet a PDA is enough. At work I need a laptop/desktop, since I need to run some software that�s not available for palmOS (etc). Furthermore, I think big spreadsheets are handled more conveniently on a 15� screen. Actually I think, PDA makers should provide a monitor-out interface on PDAs, so you can use an external screen when not on the go. THAT would be great! [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Essentially things like: notetaking ebooks PIM (datebook, address, etc) dictionnary, encyclopedia and such, are domains where NO laptop could ever compete with a handheld. I love my treo 600 but I could never imagine doing all of my office and personal work on such a small screen. Then, about six weeks ago, my Powerbook's logic board gave out and I had to send it in for repairs. In preparation for the event, I transferred the bulk of my main office files over to an SD card and ensured that my foldout keyboard's batteries were at full strength. Imagine my surprise at the end of one week of usage when I discovered that my Treo 600 was more than able to meet my needs as a laptop replacement. Granted, the screen would never cut it for graphical work and the like. However, as a clinic manager, working with policies and medical procedures on a daily basis, it was excellent. I found the following programs to be absolutely indespensable: Snappermail: access to all of my office and home accounts anytime Verichat: Always on IM sessions with suppliers and contacts Datebk5: Perfect replacement for my laptop calendar Documents to Go: Access to all of my doc and excel files. Perfect for my work although spreadsheets are simply too small for ongoing work on the Treo. Blazer: Not as good as Firefox but adequate for a week! PocketTunes: Access to my MP3's, podcasts and internet radio eWallet: Maintaining encrypted password data on our office systems and software applications As a temporary desktop replacement I have found the Treo to be fantastic. It would never completely replace my powerbook but I now know that I can leave my powerbook at the office and feel comfortable with just using my Treo and wireless keyboard for extended trips and time away! When I do not need to do any web dev work, then I use my PDA. Usually that is when I am travelnig to see friends and family on the weekend and I need to keep up with email, article writing, and other things that may be coming up. I admit, if I could find a really good drawing program, I would have even less of an incentive to have my laptop with me. But in both devices I feel that I can be as mobile as I want to be.
