North Melbourne library refurbishments

North Melbourne Library will be closed from Thursday 25 November for approximately four weeks for a redesign and thorough refurbishment.

A staffed library access point will operate in the North Melbourne Town Hall (10am to 6pm Monday to Friday) so library items can still be picked-up and dropped off over the renovation period. The City Library and East Melbourne Library are also available to library users during this period.

The refurbishment will not only allow us to improve the way the library looks but also the spaces and facilities available to library users.

Here’s what you can look forward to on reopening:

more space for you to use (100m2)
zones for noisy and quiet activities
three new meeting spaces
more public computers
a new space for teenagers
dedicated children’s computers
better access to the local history collection
new carpet and paint
new furniture
For parents eager to know what will happen to story time and Songbirds; we are currently negotiating a space nearby so we can continue to provide these programs while the library is being refurbished. Watch this space for more information.

If you have any questions or concerns about the closure, please contact Lindy Gissing on 9658 9495 or email Lindy.Gissing@melbourne.vic.gov.au. Please refer to the frequently asked questions before contacting us as they may answer your enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Why does the library need to be refurbished and redesigned?
A. The library was last refurbished in 1997 and is looking tired. The colour scheme and the carpet need updating and some of the shelves need to be replaced. We also wish to provide more user friendly, flexible spaces for our library members to use for meetings, study and computer use.

Q. Why does the library need to close?
A. The library is going to be completely re-painted, the carpet replaced and a great deal of cabling and re-wiring will take place to accommodate relocated and additional computers and other equipment. The entire collection needs to be taken away so that the old shelves can be removed and new shelves set-up.

Rather than try to work around all this activity it will be more efficient to close the library and complete it all at once. It also reduces the risk of accidents and danger to our users.

Q. When will the library be closing and for how long?
A. We will let you know as soon as closing dates are set. At this stage, it’s likely the North Melbourne Library will be closed most of November 2010.

Q. What’s happening to the meeting rooms?
A. The large meeting room will still be available out of hours for large groups. The furniture will be flexible so that it can be moved and arranged for meetings.

A smaller meeting room accommodating up to 20 people will be created and will be available to be booked in and out of library hours. Also two smaller meeting spaces are being created on the ground floor that will accommodate two to four people.

Q. Why is the children’s library being moved?
A. The current children’s library is located in an area where it is difficult for library staff and parents to have line of sight. It is therefore being moved to a location in the library where it will be much easier for staff and parents to keep an eye on children.
The current space will be taken up by the adult fiction and a reading area and likely to be used more throughout the day.

Q. What will the library staff be doing?
A. Your friendly library staff will be staffing the access point at the Town Hall, working at one of the other branches and getting new books, DVDs and CDs ready to stock the shelves with for the re-opening.

Q. What other plans do you have?
A. Next year we plan to replace the air-conditioning system, implement an improved wireless internet service, install better lighting and look at opening up even more space on the first floor for community use. We want to make North Melbourne Library as fine a community facility as any that we have in the City of Melbourne.
