I too thought about this. i think it in part shows a lack of initiative on gregor's part as well as his family. they never asked, but then he never gave them a reasons to ask. he could have easily indicated something to them, but instead he fled into his room. when grete fed him, he could have tried to control his growing bugness and jut towards the food he wanted, or kicked over that which he didn't want. it would have shown some intelligence on his aprt. by not doing this, Gregor shows his resignation to his fate, and growing loss of humanity in favor of his bugness.
