I have a feeling that they would never even think of trying this, because the second he turned into a bug Gregor outlived his usefulness. Without him able to work, the rest of the family just didn't want him around any more. I know this sounds ridiculously cruel, but I could never even picture any member of the family taking the time out to test if Gregor was really capapble of human cognition any more. If they were even paying attention, they would have known that he was because he wanted to sit with them in the living room every night after dinner. THe family was just so biased as to their own views, and they didn't want to see an alternitive.
