Subject: Role Switching

In the last scene where Quixote finally denounces his knighthood and confesses his previous ignorance, I was a little confused by the reactions of those around him. First, they think that "he was in the grips of some new madness." Then it seems like they can't handle his sanity and want a compromise. Of course Sancho attempts to persuade him that he's wrong, knights really do exist and Sancho continues throughout the scene to talk about Dulcinea. After SP suggests, "let's go off into the countryside dressed up as shepherds as we said we would -and perhaps behind some bush or other we'll find the lady Dulcinea, disenchanted and looking as pretty as a picture." When he finishes this little speech, Sanson says, "and the worthy SP has hit the nail right on the head." Maybe I missed what their intentions were, but I was a little confused by their reaction. Why did they not embrace him in his sanity, because that's what they had been longing for for so long right?
