Subject: Hamlet and Don Quixote

When reading the handout, there seemed to be a lot of parallels that could have been drawn between Hamlet and Don Quixote. Both main characters seem to be searching for a set of standards that have decayed over time and are now gone. They both want to restore these standards to the world. In Hamlet we see that "there is something rotten in the state of Denmark". Hamlet looks back and thinks of how his father had the standards he wanted Denmark to have. But with his father's murder these standards seem to have passed with his untimely death. Hamlet believes he will restore Denmark with his uncle's death. Don Quixote wants to bring back chivalry which is also a set of standards. He sees the courtiers of his day just going around in fancy clothes. There is nothing there of what Don Quixote believes in their lives.
