It seems to me that it is not so much that they cannot handle his sanity as that they think this is part of a depression that will bring about Don Quixote's death. The book tells us the two probable causes of death were "either out of the depression brought on by his defeat or by divine ordination"(975). I think they desire a compromise because they would rather have a living Don Quixote than a dead Alonso Quixano the Good. This is reflected in the opening line of Sancho's speech: "Oh no, don't die, master...Take my advice and live for a long long time, because the maddest thing a man can do in this life is to let himself die" (979). From this it would seem that the motivations of Don Quixote's friends in suddenly encouraging him are founded on the idea that he is falling into a deadly depression.
