Subject: what does hamlet really want?

however, in this scene he is trying o get his mother to repent of her sins. why? hamlet is determined that he must kill claudius, but if his mother will break the marriage, he wont have to. he tells her that if she "confesses what is past, [she'll] avoid what is to come." hamlet sees himself literally as the avenging arm of an angry God, but offering a chance for repentance and forgiveness. if it is ignored, then e will have no choice but to kill claudius. in essence, hamlet is trying to get his mother to do the right thing, so he wont have to kill claudius.
