Just a reminder of John 15:13 which says "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." I think Joel's point is makes sense that suffering forms deep bond of love. You could also take movies where some girl falls in love with some guy that saves her from a burning building, or when someone is in the hospital in a critical state of condition suddenly we see someone's love for them. It is the idea that suffering forms deeper bonds of love and helps us realize that our time is limited with that person whom we may love.
