I thought it is the police's duty to protect the innocent - even from their tragically misguided parents. To ensure their safety above and beyond all else, even if it means inconveniently holding fire until they had done so. They failed to do this. The fact that there seems to be little interest in condemning them for their murderous incompetence is as worrying as their actions.
