Subject: TASK 5 READING

1) The text I chose was "Treatment not Time" from the CNN Learning Resources page.

2) The text is about the new law in California that changes the sentence for possessing drugs from jail time to treatment. The arguments in favor include the fact that drug addicts have not commited any violent crime or broken any law other than carrying drugs. Moreover, the costs will drop to up to 250 million dollars a year. However, there is still some fear and uncertainty about this law because people may claim that the treatment did not work and especially because some DA's might start pressing secondary charges in order to send the offender to jail.

3) I got one or two words wrong in the vocabulary section but did pretty well in all the other ones.

4) The site suggest for the task (Tower of English Reading) is very good and I would suggest it to anybody interested in reading since it gives you numerous possibilities and a great variety of readings. From this page I went to the CNN Learning Resources page which also has a number of choices. It is organized by categories and the reader may choose according to his/her interest. There are different types of activities that lead the learner to test different areas as far as reading comprehension goes. It makes the reader think about vocabulary. choice of words, conclusions, etc.
