Nick Valensi dated Amanda de Cadenet for a while--she was married to John Taylor from Duran Duran (who is now married to a nice lady named Gela who is a little older than he is, and who also has a child--she runs/owns Juicy Couture). Amanda made him over (Nick, I mean) and then, poof, I don't think they date anymore. Amanda's interesting--she used to be tight with Courtney Love and she HATES fans, but she has a really good reason to. They were shitful to her while she was married to John. Unfortunately, she was shitful right back. I never had any conflicts with her because I wasn't after her husband and thought she was being treated badly mostly because the fans were furious that John was actulaly having a sex life that didn't involve any of them.
Take that as you will.
Anyway, Nick...he got a nice wardrobe and haircut out of the deal. ;)
Julian is standoffish, and he may very well like boys, but he also definitely likes girls. He is just in a position to be very choosy about things, so unless you're stunning and can afford to fly from town to town, it's probably not worth your effort at the moment.
As an example, when they played in Athens, they spent most of their time playing...with a Video Golf game. Lots of pretty girls throwing themselves at them, and they couldn't be arsed to flirt back.
They also like to party, so you'd probably need to catch them while they are coherent and aware of things, i.e., before the show. They rarely stick around to meet people after, at least at the 5-6 shows I've seen.
They WILL be very gracious and friendly if you approach them without an agenda and still get a kick out of signing things. All in all, I thought they were adorable and sweet, but then I wasn't after anything. I suspect that they can be rather dismissive if they aren't into whatever is being offered, be it a conversation or anything else. They do definitely have an attitude that there's nothing you can offer that they need to be bothered with, but that is, like you said, probably due to all the hype. I had no trouble having a chat with any of them, and they relaxed when they clued in that I wasn't hitting on them or starstruck.
Julian is beautiful in person, incidentally. A bit short, but cute as a button. The fact that he's aware of this somehow doesn't spoil it.
Another note: don't make the mistake of being rude to their manager or crew. They consider them part of the band, pretty much. It's no accident that they got glamour shots in the CD booklet along with the musicians.
