I am almost finished reading Rebel Heart. I had no idea who BeBe Buell was until I found this messageboard, and even then I still could not quite figure out who she was, why people hated her (or defended her), or what her relationship with Cyote Shivers is. All I knew was that she was Liv Tylers mother.
First of all I want to say that this book is, above all, extremely entertaining, quite a page-turner. Secondly I, a music journalist, have to say that this is one of the most badly-written books I've ever read. It would be excusable if Bebe wrote it alone, but she had a co-author, which throws all his credibility out the window. Anyway...
When I first started reading the book I thought it was great. I really liked Bebe. I thought she was slightly a ditz, but I really liked her. I loved the stories from the '70s. I was totally into this book. I thought to myself "why do all these girls on groupie central hate her so much?" I thought she was pretty cool. Then as the book went on I got tired of her "voice". I got tired of her reminding me how beautiful she was, and how she was meant to be a rock and roll singer.
And how the HELL could she lie to Todd Rundgren and make him believe he was Liv's father? Who does that to someone? That was a horrible thing for her to do to Todd, Steven and Liv. And she can't blame it on being young, confused and uneducated - because I'm younger than she was then, and I didn't go to college either (but I'm a music jouranlist, yes) and I know better than to do stupid shit like that.
Then she mentioned Cyote Shivers. I had no idea she MARRIED him! And she treated him like shit!! In her book she has more than one photo of her wedding day and they're all just of HER! No photos of them as a couple! In fact the only photo of Cyote in the whole book was a photo of him with Bebe, Steve Tylor and his fiancee. What crap. What a bitch. And then she thinks Prince wrote "Little Red Corvette" for her? And Elvis Costello was jealous because of it? What a fucking nut! The thing that sealed the deal was her obsession with astrology and karam and all of that bullshit. She would make these 'connections' that were extreeeeeeemly farfetched and call it destiny, or fate, or karma. NUT-JOB!
I'm not yet finished with the book, but now I feel I have an accurate idea of who this woman is. And I didn't get this idea from reading the slanderous posts on this message board - I got that idea from reading her own book!
