The Strand....gone,,,,i'm gutted -- Bob Hasted, 13:57:30 04/24/06 Mon [1]

It was bad enough seeing the Capri Bar was closed when Ian (Smudge) and I visited Lippie 18 mths ago, please dont tell me the Weissenburg brewery has closed as well. I was in 56 Bty from '74 to '77, and don't recognize all the names of those going on the reunion, but i'm sure i will recognize some old faces. Looking forward to it.

Bob.

Lippstadt -- Topper, 01:43:49 04/11/06 Tue [1]

Time is running out for those who havent booked.
This is going to be a venue never to be forgotten. Its going to be great to see all those faces (though somewhat older!) again, particularly those that we havent seen for 20 years or more. Another great opportunity to catch up. I was amazed by the amount of people that still live in Lippstadt, either from my school days there, or from time with the fighting 23rd.

Its going to be great!!!!

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Travelling to Lippstadt -- Jim Martin, 03:04:12 03/28/06 Tue [1]

I've just checked my ticket and have found that I've booked the flight on the Thursday, and not on the Friday when the majority are travelling. Still, no problem as it appears that I'll have to take the train instead of the transport that has been layed on by Paul. Sorry mate!...
Gives my missus an extra day to tour the Shops! Still there is a plus factor that I will get the opportunity to sample the local brew in some of the watering holes before the majority arrive!.....
Just a thought, anybody arriving early can contact me, if you have a mind too, through the Lippisher hof hotel in Cappel strasse, if your a mind to knock the froth off a few of the Amber nectar!
Have a safe journey. Looking forward to meeting up with you all, after all of these years!........

The response i have had for REUNION POLO SHIRTS has not been as great as i thought it would have been.

For those of you who have put an order in i will see if i can get a resonable price,if not then i will have to cancel the idea unless i get any more orders.

As i am sure you are all aware with this sort of thing, the more you order the better the price is and i am not prepared to pay 'over the odds' and nor should any of us.

Anyway bye for now then............SPIKE

Stan, you're absolutely correct in your assumption, old friend. Lady luck has shined on me to the extent that I never have had to moderate my drinking habits to any degree in all these years. Fortunate, because I have had no bad health, so I've never had to evaluate my lifestyle to any great degree! I must admitt that I'm looking forward to this jaunt to Lippstadt at the end of April. It will be surreal, to meet up with some of the characters from our mispent youth. I still consider that Lippstadt was one of the best posting's in my forteen years Army service. I still do everything with a pause of two, three!
If you get my drift!.....lol

battery crest. -- mick sobota, 00:34:26 01/26/06 Thu [2]

Replies:

[> Re: battery crest. -- Jim Martin, 04:18:16 01/26/06 Thu [1]

Mick, I cannot say why there is not Battery crest on the site, but I assume that it has something to do with the fact that these items are proberbly stored somewhere, as are most things in 'suspended ammination'collecting dust either at Woolwich or Larkhill. The only 'crest' that I have is on the 'Battery plaque' that was given to me upon leaving the Regiment back in'78!
Those on the website are only counters that allow you to access the appropriate sites designated directly from this site. I will make enquires through my list of contacts, and try and run down where exactly all the Battery archives are held, and hopefully who to contact to obtain access, if anybody is interested to follow up. [> Re: battery crest. -- Jim Martin, 07:40:22 01/26/06 Thu [1]

I've had a go with producing an image of the 23 Battery Crest. Scanned it, but image doesn't quite do the business, so I've opted for an untried method of using a digital camera to produce a much more crisp image. Once I've editored it through the paint shop and f-a-r-t a-r-s-e-d about with it, to obtain the best possible image, then I shall e-mail it on attachment to Spike to use if he has a mind to use stipulated on the site!......
Can't say fairer than that! Now, off for an unwindie drinkie poo, as my brain is begining to hurt with all this technical stuff! lol.

JOKE -- SPIKE, 10:59:36 01/19/06 Thu [1]

A thirty-something woman meets a rather handsome and charming man in the bar of a highly-regarded restaurant. They talk, they connect, and they end up leaving together. They go back to his apartment, and as he shows her around she notices that his bedroom is completely packed with soft, sweet, cuddly teddy bears.
Three wall-length shelves loaded with hundreds and hundreds of the little buggers... carefully placed in rows covering the entire wall!
It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing this very un-macho display. There were small bears all along the bottom shelf; medium-sized bears covering the entire length of the middle shelf; and huge, enormous bears running all the way along the top shelf. Quite the display! She found it strange for a man (who was clearly straight) to have such a large a collection of teddy bears, but doesn't mention it out loud, being really quite impressed by his obvious sensitive side. All the while thinking to herself, "Oh goodness! Maybe this guy could be the one - maybe he could father my children!"
She turns to him. They kiss slowly... and then they rip each other's clothes off and make hot, steamy love.
After an intense, explosive night of raw passion with this wonderful, sensitive guy - lying there together in the afterglow, the woman rolls over towards him smiling sweetly. She strokes his chest and asks coyly,
"So? How was it?"
The guy says: "Help yourself to any prize from the bottom shelf."

Steve, I tried scanning those photographs from that mag through the computer, but unfortunately they turned out a bit 'naff' mainly because the photographer was no David Bailey or the quality of the paper was second~rate. Regardless, I shall try and get my wife to un~darken the images especially on the group photo's of the guys in the various troops, that was taken outside the billets in Portadown. If its successful, then I will send them to Spike. Glad to see that you are still alive and kicking!

'Happy Crappy 23 Chappy' -- Jim Martin, 06:13:08 12/05/05 Mon [2]

Well Guys, I see the 'silly season' is once more fast approaching. And as the old proverbial song goes "Another year older, and deeper in debt!"....I guess that we are all suckers for punishment! I'm definately not a recycled teenager. I don't think that I would want to go through all the b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t associated with this time of year!
Christmas is for the kids, and New Year is for us bigger kids. And the older we get the dafter we become with the onslaught of senile dementia and incontinence. (Joking aside,) I always try to reflect on those who are no longer with us, those who influenced us in our youth, and helped mould us into the kind of people that we are today! A time to remember, without getting bloody morbid about it! Hopefully over a few unwindie drinkie poo's of the alcoholic variety.
Too those of us that are still alive and kicking I say, Here's too happy days, naughty nights, and no regrets!
Seasonal Greetings to you all! And as Dave Allen, that astute Irishman used to say "May whatever God you have look after you and your's"......Hope to see some of you in April 2006. TTFN (Ta ta for now!) as that geriatric old f-a-r-t Jimmy Young would state, in his senility!....Ha Ha, boom, boom !!.....basil bloody brush!.....

Lofty old son, I didn't realise that you had influenced me in any shape or form, as I was refering to those who had passed over into that big Gun park in the sky! You know, where we all will end up eventually. Or maybe in your case 'Biker Heaven!' I must admit that sometimes I wake up in the morning feeling near death experience suffering from an acute hangover from over indulging in 'White Lightening' from the night before. When rigour mortis sets in from mixing Cidar with Viagra! Lethal combination, if you know what I mean!......
This crazy b-u-g-g-e-r, will always mix business with pleasure. As for drinking and driving, I find it difficult to do the both at the same time, so I don't do the latter anymore when I'm on the juice!
Take care my friend, enjoy the festive season, as I will !
Regards to you and your's! All the Best for 2006.

'Creature Features' -- Jim Martin, 03:02:09 11/29/05 Tue [1]

Who can remember certain characters?
There was a guy in the Battery called Kojavas, who we nicknamed 'Cornflakes' because of his skin complaint. He was kinda like my labrador puppy ( meaning, the lights on but there is nobody in!) A definate non~entity! That lad should have never been in the Army! How the hell, that he ever got through training is a mystery to behold! The amount of times that he was threatened with 'Regimental Baths'was beyond me.(We were not politically correct in them days!) I wonder whatever happened to him?.....
Other beasties apart from the 23'leper, was someone known as the 'Wilderbeast' and 'Baked Bean Jeff' whose party trick was to squeeze his plebb's or plukies into his bier and drink of the contents, much to the disgust of the audience witnessing this exhibition in question!
Another guy would scoff these gigantic moth's that used to circulate around the lights! He used to sit there with a plate full of tomato Ketchup, catch them, dunk them in the sauce and swallow them whole! Then complain about having butterflies in his stomach! He certainly had moth~balls! What-a-player!....
There were many 'beasties' within the Regiment of them days! Can any of you think of any others?.............

By the way Cricket, this Andrea, 'nice set of headlamps'seem apparent!....Don't you think?

'23 Bty Fancy Dress Bash' -- Jim Martin, 03:37:44 11/21/05 Mon [6]

I remember once that we had this bash in the Battery Club where we all had to dress up in fancy dress for the occasion. Can't remember exactly what it was for? Though who needed an excuse for a p-i-s-s up, so to speak!
Anyway the guys were dressing up in some strange outrageous outfits. I recollect that I went as a tramp (alright, nobody would know the difference!) Attention to detail was the thing,so apart from the Army flasher Mac' and a pocket full of dolly~mixtures and a baccy tin full of butt ends and unshaven, with jeans cut down to provide leggings below the knee. String vest and a scimppy pair of shreaddies. Basically you get the picture!...Regardless we had the A/Ajt comming and She was a bit of a cracker, blonde and petite with all the curves in the right places!
Anyway the lads dared me to do the old "Compo sweetie little girl" routine with a quick flash (I forgot to mention that I had a plastic bottle of dual between my legs to give her a blast of the white disgusting stuff) Dual was the liquid that we used to put on our toecaps of our boots to give that added shine! Things did not go according to plan as when I went through the routine the stuff sprayed everywhere. She ended up a rather sticky fantasy blonde, covered from head to foot! Nevertheless, she saw the funny side of it! Eventually! Squaddie humour is priceless! Also it was the first and last time that I ever drank Brandy and Coke out of a Brasso can. Some things you can't live down. Don't you think?......................

Cricket, I suppose I should thankyou for that pearl of wisdom regarding that bloody photograph!
I'll buy you a bottle of Weissenberg and a packet of 'Dolly mixtures' just to loose that photo in question old mate. Or maybe I'll send you a picture of the lady in question (Miss Jenkins) flashing her exeptional pins in uniform. I can remember myself and half the lads following her on a cross~country run on the 'scatter area'. She was a vision of beauty all in white. It was poetry watching her rear two ferets in a sack swinging too and frow as she run, and it certainly kept our spirits up, apart from other things!
Smudge, I've booked into the Hotel Lippisher Hof in Cappelstr, for the weekend of the Reunion. I don't believe that we will be the only Brits to be staying there! See you there!........Looking forward to the guesthaus crawl!.JM

Cricket, I think that people might change outwardly, but hopefully they do not change in regards their inward thinking perspective, they maybe older, but no wiser! Those going back on this Reunion to relive the past will be sadly disappointed as nothing stays the same unfortunately!I have no illusions on revisiting Lippstadt. I consider that it will be a good weekend to remember who and what we were in those days of our youth. Too be able to do this in bloody good company over a few drinks of the alcoholic variety and enjoy a few laughs will be surreal. I've been on many Reunions over the years, and I have always found the comradeship is always second too none, that brings back people time and again. It's like a rather exclusive club where the members are special, because regardless of rank we all served for whatever reasons, in 27 'penal panzer' Regiment. And memories and especially the colourful characters will always be remembered! Don't you think?
Take a bunch of ex~squaddies and their women and you are in for a bonzer party, that will be a memorable weekend!
My ball & chain will be off to Koln (Cologne) next week to do her christmas shopping! So she will be well up for this jaunt to Lippstadt in April. As long as she leaves me plenty of Bier coupons, then I should be o.k.!......
Speak to you again soon.

Linda, reference your father,he will always be a big fella who earned his respect, from yours truly and a multitude of others who were privileged to have served with him in those days when soldiering was not so politically correct and when a sense of humour was considered to be a necessary part of Army life. Everything was done over a drink in those times of what I can remember! Colourful characters like your father were the backbone of the Battery and Regiment who shall always be remembered. Please send the 'big fella' my regards, in the hope that he can be persuaded to go to this Reunion in Lippstadt. As it is very apt, that this Reunion be held in his old stomping ground, which is the Officers Mess, and not in the Sergeants Mess which is now I believe is a Kindergarten! (So, not a lot changes from that perspective) But considering our age and mental capacity might have been more in keeping with us 'nutters' who served in 27 penal panzer Regiment in those crazy days of our youth. I'm looking forward to the geriatric boogie, wheelchairs and zimmer frames withstanding of course!.....
No drinking and driving you old farts! Philisan(fortifies the over forties) and pils all the way nurse!.............

'Waiting on the Ruperts' -- Jim Martin, 06:08:21 11/16/05 Wed [1]

Thanks to Pete Brookes for sending me another photo of Shaun Dalton with surprise, suprise a tube in his hand. Never knew him without one! Anyway we had been volunteered to provide a waitering service for this Officers Mess function, so we had to turn up in barrack dress trousers with white shirts and stable belts, and parade in front of big 'Rocky' Hudson. Who detailed us off to either waiter on or work in the background. Shaun gets to waiter on as he had done it before apparently. Anyway he starts performing while serving these Ruperts and their ladies, and accidentally on purpose spills these petit pois (bloody peas) down the frontage of this well endowered female in her low cut dress. Uproar ensued, and he was bannished to the kitchen area to clear up after the nose bags were taken off and they had departed for the bar. I remember that we were polishing off every concocion of alcohol dreggs and all, that was left. Most of us were blotto' by this time. The wine was flowing so Shaun was in his element! Its amazing what we got away with. I think that was my first and last time that I got volunteered to serve these Ruperts in their Mess. What a caper, as I've never laughed so much as to Shaun's antic's, serving while smashed out of our brains! Another reminder, because I believe the actual 'Reunion' will be held in what was the Officer's Mess of our day. Bloody surreal is what I call it! What say you?..............

Perhaps Cricket can enlighten you as to the above as he still lives in Lippstadt.
Talking about nostalgia, I must see if the old Cinema is still in Sud strasse. Remember going there to watch the old Tam~Tam (winky~wanky) films and getting a culture shock as the bloody place was full up with O A P's in the back rows of the Cinema. Remember getting the proverbial bottle of pils and minuture bottle of schnappes with your ticket on entry. 'Characters Remembered' -- Jim Martin, 04:13:31 11/14/05 Mon [1]

Characters Remembered
I remember this certain sergeant who did everything by the numbers, you know with a pause of two, three. Real gold plated Army barmy type. Even to the extent of making Love to his wife! Foreplay to him was kneeing Gun~drill.

And to make matters worse, used to shout out Fire orders whilst banging away at his missus! You know such profanities as Fire Mission Battery...Take post..H.E 117 quick charge two..Load..At my command..Fire for effect..etc... It must of been a blast being one of his neighbours listening to all this going on night after night.
Even on the dance floor this guy would perform as if he was on the parade drill square. You can just imagine the scene...Yeh! Some of you out there must have an inkling as to who I'm on about! I'm sure that he is still alive and kicking out there somewhere! Even nowadays doing the geriatric boogie, though I'm not too sure about the kneeing gun~drill bit, unless he's got padded knee pads and is hitting the viagra!......What say you?

Washed out all my hair colour since then and lost the moustache. Well spotted though, looking forward to the guesthaus crawl, and a few asbach and cokes.

Smudge, I don't know at the moment as to what hotel that I'll book into in Lippstadt. My guess is that we will all meet up somewhere and do the proverbial Guesthaus crawl around the watering holes around the town hitting the Capri Bar along the way at some point.
By the way, I believe that I've got a photo of you taken way back in 1977 in Ulster. You look a bit hung-over, either that or sea-sick due to the fact that you had been sea angling! It looked rather fishy anyway!.....
In regards flights, I think that I'll take Spike's advice and fly out on the Thursday from Stanstead and return on the Sunday, all things considered, as it seems to be the best option under the circumstances. Better that, than spending most of the time travelling!........
This 'Reunion' should be a memorable weekend for all those who make the trip to Lippstadt. Can't say whether any of us will ever get another opportunity to meet up and partake of the local brew, and see if any of us has aged gracefully! Proberbly not, as I hope that we are all still crazy, and up for a laugh! What say you?.............

I HAVE PUT A 'LINK'FOR AIR BERLIN ON THE 'LIPPSTADT'PAGE FOR YOU ALL IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE FLIGHTS THAT ARE AVAILIABLE FOR OUR REUNION IN APRIL.
AS I HAVE SAID I HAVE BOOKED AND I KNOW SOME OTHERS OF YOU WHO HAVE BOOKED ALSO.
THE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE ONLY CERTAIN TIMES THE FLIGHTS ARE LEAVING CERTAIN DESTINATIONS,YOU WILL FIND YOURSELVES FLYING THERE AS A UNIT,IN WHICH I THINK WILL BE GREAT AS WE WILL ALL BE GOING AS ONE,DEPENDING ON WHICH DATE YOU ARE GOING OVER.

AS FOR 'BUBBLES'.......WELL HAND ON HEART I CAN HONESTLY SAY.............I NEVER VENTURED THERE!
ONE NIGHT THOUGH I DID POKE MY HEAD AROUND THE DOOR OF BIG GINGERS ROOM (REME)THAT WAS AT THE END OF THE BTY BLOCK,AND SAW ABOUT 5 OR 6 LADS INDULGING IN A 'ROASTING'.
I WONT MENTION ANY BODY'S NAMES AS THE TROUBLE AND STRIFE IN MAY CAUSE.ISEN'T THAT RIGHT MR WEBSTER AND MR CROFT?

Pete, they do say that 'Gunners' do it with a Bang!
Can't recollect the amount of fizzer's that I've been on!
Seriously though, I can't really hear to the full effect Guns or bloody fireworks anymore, due to the fact that I developed what they call the 'Gunners disease'or 'Gunner ear' No not Gonorrhoea!...
I'm kind of a bit mutt and jeff in my left ear so Artillery fire is not like sex to me anymore!
Though, there is one consolation in all this and that is when you get a bunch of ex-Gun bunnies in a bar and they shout for more beer, they have a tendancy to go mutt& jeff when somebody asks "Whose Round is it?"....
So you see that there is a positive side to having the Gunners disease after all!....Don't you agree?

'Bubbles is in the Block' -- Jim Martin, 06:08:21 11/03/05 Thu [3]

Following on from what Dicky Broughton said regarding certain females being in the single men's accommadation.
I can remember a certain fraulein nicknamed 'Bubbles'who spent many a night in the barracks. She could have been classed as the Regimental bicycle. I think the poor girl used to live on compo cheese sandwiches. She was no looker!
But she was always up for a laugh! The amount of times that I saw guys hoisting her up the wall by 22 Sgt's Mess either bringing her into camp or getting rid of her.
I remember that there was a big intake at one time, and they billeted these guys in shiny Six Bty's attic accommadation. For some apparent reason they were not allowed out of Camp till they were dispearsed to the various Battery's. So some entrepeneur's decided that they needed some sport of the female variety so they smuggle Bubbles into the block to amuse these young soldiers. I'm not quite certain, but I think they charged these guys five marks per head for the privilege! Needless to say three days later she staggered out of camp, via over the wall forfilled in more ways than one, if you get my drift!
Apparently a good time was had by one and all!.....
The Churchill Barracks Creature Feature you might say!

Just a thought!...I hope that it wasn't the same rubber bullet that Bubbles was performing with, that I sent home to a girl that I knew, and had the 'hots'for!....
Thankfully in them days we didn't have to fork out for such things as duri-cell batteries for these rubberised items that reached female parts when the real thing was unavailable at the time! The mind boggles, don't you think?
I'm off for a cylindrical tube of joy myself, though this particular one is of the alcoholic liquid variety and not the latter, Cheers lads!........

'Duty Free Boogie' -- Jim Martin, 04:29:43 11/01/05 Tue [1]

Who can remember the amount of times that we all tried to smuggle into the UK contraband above the legal limit. Most of us, at one time or another have tried various scam's to evade paying the excess duty on the goods in question whether it be just fags and spirits or other items. I remember travelling back to the UK with Andy Rowan and a couple of other lads in Andy's Austin Allegro. The car was stashed with Spirits and Cigarettes. Hidden under the back seat and various other conceilled places including in the wheel hubs etc...We even removed all the silver paper from the cartons of cigarettes. We were last on the ferry, and unfortunatly we didn't realise that we would be first off at the other end. We were flapping to say the least when we approached the Customs area on disembarking. Produced our I.D cards and bluffed our way through! I became more devious after that, especially when flying, as used to off load my excess on the single non-smokers etc.. to be collected on clearing Customs, usually on the transport from the Airport. Some other guys used too walk brassed necked through the Customs with suitcases full of booty without once getting stopped. Due either to Luck or Balls, definately!....What say you? How many of you out there, have used ingenious methods to escape being caught in poccession by the dreaded Custom & Excise Gestapo?

[Edit]

'The Custom &Excise Airport Bash' -- Jim Martin, 03:35:35 10/31/05 Mon [1]

I remember this one time that we came back from a tour of N.Ireland, back to Fallingbostel. We were all due to go on leave sometime just before the Christmas holiday period. We were due to fly into Luton Airport. The plane couldn't land due to the area being fog bound, so we were diverted to Birmingham, due to all other London Airports being overloaded once again due to the weather conditions. We landed and proceeded through to Customs with our luggage.
The Customs officers knew where we had come from and decided to check everybody’s baggage knowing that we would be over and above the duty-free limit for booze and cigarette's. The situation began to get well out of order when they started to confiscate the excess booty from us as we refused point blank to cough up the cash. The Rupert in charge on the flight stepped in and tried to reason with these bastards, but they were not willing to compromise!....The Police were called and we were held in the Customs area. The Police arrived in force but did not enter. They basically stated unless a 'Riot’ ensued they could not get involved due to the fact as we had not cleared Customs we were technically not officially in the UK!...The Rupert, the clever bugger suggested that we stay put in the Customs area till the coaches arrived from Luton to take us back down the motorway to London. He knew that we had a long wait due to the weather conditions.
We clicked on being in this area allowed us to reclaim the goods that the bloody Customs had confiscated from us, and as long as we drank the contents in this specified area then Customs couldn't do a dam thing about it!.....which really 'pissed' them off!...We passed the bottles around and proceeded to have a bit of a party. A surreal situation that I have never come across since. By the time the coaches arrived we had consumed majority of the spirits, the remainder was poured down one of the sinks. We were escorted onto the coaches by the Police, most of us staggering but satisfied that we had got one over on those bloody bastards of Customs & Excise. Those of us who were there can substantiate the above happening....with content. I thought that this story was very apt, considering that the previous topic was about flights from Airports. I don't think that kind of situation could happen ever again, in this day and age. Don't you think?

'Those travelling to Lippstadt in 2006 -- Jim Martin, 06:08:36 10/30/05 Sun [1]

I see that Air Berlin are offering cheap flights from the UK to Paderborn/Lippstadt, basically for around £19-00 one-way. Hard at the moment to determine the actual Cost both ways. Flights are either from Manchester or Stansted(London) or Southampton or Bournmouth. I propose that we wait till after the New Year to see what other options are applicable to get to the venue in question. I do not know if they still do flights to Gutersloh from Luton?
Too early yet to make a decision on travelling arrangements, though its always a good policy to check on all alternatives. Don't you think?..........

Concerning the Battery Club didn't Moffitt run it at one time before West took over?
If I remember correctly, that 'Out of Hours' drinking used to go on at the discression of the BONCO on duty. Depending of course who was on!......
You could always get a drink in them days regardless what time of day or night that you fancied.
I remember mornings going to the Deutscher Kantina sometime after ten o'clock for a few pick me up's after Naafi break and attending the 'Animals Bar' at lunchtimes.
Starting off in the Battery Clubs in the early evening before we departed for the high and low spots of Lippstadt.
The weekends were something different as we usually did a pub crawl going down into town.
Friday afternoon was always a time when some of us used to collect our duty free's from the Naafi. Our own personal supply of booze and fags to last us through till the following week.
Some of the guys used to have crates of beer under the beds and optics in the back of the lockers to cater for every contingency.
Of course this was before the drinking culture was slowly erradicated from Army Life. More's the pity! What say you?

BRITTISH ARMY BADGES -- spikerman2327@hotmail.com, 11:12:12 10/16/05 Sun [1]

I am reproducing an email received from
Lieutenant Colonel Robin Hodges
HQ EUFOR
BFPO 543
Email: robinhodges@armymail.mod.uk

Dear Sir

On 1 December 2005 I will publish my new book, BRITISH ARMY BADGES.
The beautifully illustrated hard backed book reproduces over 3,000 cap, collar, shoulder, arm and specialist badges of the Army, Territorial Army, Cadets, Her Majesty’s Body Guards and Royal Companies, most at full size and all in full colour. It also features more than 1,000 photographs of soldiers taken on operations or at Pass Out Parades wearing Number 1 or 2 Dress adorned with medals.
In what I have found to be a fascinating 552 page survey, carried out in collaboration with collectors, researchers and museums, I have detailed the history of the badges worn immediately before the changes which begin in 2006, and the lore associated with them.

BRITISH ARMY BADGES is my legacy to the Army after almost 37 years of service. As the most comprehensive register of army badges available it will be an invaluable and collectable reference work for decades to come and an ideal gift for members of the Army and their families, collectors, researchers and military historians. I have attached a review written by Richard Holmes, the renowned military historian, TV presenter and author of more than a dozen books, including In the Footsteps of Churchill (2005) which accompanies a major BBC series of the same name.

We are ‘self publishing’ and the book will only be available from the author. To order a copy please complete and return the enclosed order form along with your payment.
If you are interested in receiving further details please contact us at any time at our home address, BRITISH ARMY BADGES, Court Hill Farm, Potterne, Devizes, SN10 5PN

Who remembers Paul 'Finlay' Cowan. What I can recollect, that he was a Gun No1 on 'D'sub. You could always tell when Paul was going down the town on the razzle, as he would always dress~up in this brown suit, and believe it or not, a brolly which to some might look a bit weird. I kind of think he was trying to portray that character out of 'The Avengers', you know the one I mean John Steed!
I can always remember him dancing about with this bloody brolly in a Disco on his own. I'll never live down the time I presented him with a 'Richard the Third' in a Cigar box on a Gun position, and he ended up chasing me about all over the place! The lads were in hysteric's.
A colourful character was Paul Cowan in more ways than one! Don't you think?..........

'Crofty, the paper hat merchant' -- Jim Martin, 06:10:15 10/08/05 Sat [1]

I remember us on a regular basis getting paralytic, and Crofty, getting bored and making these paper hats in one of the many boozer's of the town. He made about three that I can recollect, one small, medium and large and placed them on his bonch while walking or staggering around the various watering holes! Anyway to cut a long story short, we got pulled over by the RMP town patrol. This 'monkey' told him to remove the head~dress in question, of which he did with a flourish to the astonishment of the RMP that he had another under the one that he had just removed! Well this 'monkey' was gobsmacked with these antic's, and I actually saw a slight trace of a smile begin to cross the ugly mush of this bastion of law enforcement. Upon being ordered to remove this second paper hat and finding that there was indeed a third underneath, this RMP cracked up and by this time was in hysterical mode! I consider that this was the first time that I have ever witnessed a 'monkey' with a sense of humour! Suffice to say we were allowed to continue with our quest on getting inebriated out of our tiny minds! It's bloody amazing what stupid things that you can remember! Don't you think?.........

Scouse,
You'll not dreaming! As there was a piano upstairs in the 'Goldern Hinde'in the town centre.
I remember it well! Me and Gunner Croft used to go and play silly b-u-g-g-e-r-s in that establishment, trying to chat up all these German students of the female persuasion without much success as we were usually blitz'ed by the time we got to that particular watering hole!.......

our shaun the clown -- tomo, 07:26:24 10/06/05 Thu [1]

just been reading the story of you and shaun staggering back from the town and the spitfire trick.thay was typical of shaun his humour like you said is was second to none i just wish i had been with you that sunday afternoon to see the reaction on those germans faces.he did the waste of space act one lunchtime but it was a cardboard box that got smashed over his head.he was the life and soul of the animals bar and indeed anywhere where you had the pleasure of his company.i believe he is buried in belfast.

'Our Shaun the Clown' -- Jim Martin, 06:32:10 10/06/05 Thu [1]

I remember staggering back from town one Sunday afternoon with Shaun, obviously worst for drink and passing this Veterans Home located somewhere in the backstreets on the way back to Camp. There was all these old German guys standing about on this concrete patio getting some fresh air presumably. I noted that in the middle was this massive bush with all these guys milling around it. So Shaun says to me "Watch this" and then he shouts out "Achtung Spitfire" pointing up at the sky!....All these old guys start to panic and begin to throw themselves down under this bush for cover. It was something like a re~run from a Monty Phyton sketch!....Surreal, but bloody funny, all the same! Squaddie Humour is priceless!...Don't you think? Shaun's antics used to have us all in hysteric's and not only in the Animals Bar in the Naafi either! He shall be sadly missed by all that came across this crazy character and his not so political correct squaddie humour!.....

Tommo, I was one of the Animal Bar lunchtime boozer's along with Eddie Cole, Taff Hopkins, Dave Atkins and Shaun. Haven't seen Scouse Kehoe since Woolwich towards when I departed in 1984.
Sorry to hear about Shaun, as I didn't know that he had popped his clogs, so to speak. Another colourful character bites the dust!...His humour shall be missed by all those privileged enough to see him perform when under the influence!....A very funny individual who will be sadly missed. Sometime shortly I will tell you a funny story about our Shaun on my next thread.....
Time for a cylindrical tube of joy!.....
Catch you later!.....

parting glass -- tomo, 10:04:55 10/05/05 Wed [1]

talking about getting caught with booze while on duty i can remember the time i was on the rp staff doing my usual 2 hour stag and i had a bottle of herforder pils and a bottle opener in the sentry box.i decided to take the risk and open the bottle and when i was just about to drink the last drop harry pizzy caught me and it resulted in me doing an extra 4 hours on the gate.had harry decided to charge me i think i would have been looking at at least 28 days inside.as far as drinking at dinner time in the naafi i think the animals bar took more trade than the main bar did at night time.

'The Parting Glass' -- Jim Martin, 08:03:47 10/05/05 Wed [1]

I remember my last exercise within the Regiment around '81 time. Being lined up on the tarmac besides the 432's with all our kit awaiting an inspection by some Rupert or other.
Anyway this officer pulls out a four pack from one of the guys gear and we see the offender being marched away down to the Guardroom. Yours truly was sweating like hell because I too was carrying Alcohol (Spirits, in my water bottles) The point was well and truly crystal clear for all to see.
I suddenly realised that this was not the Army that I had joined. Everything of what I can remember was done over a drink, and suddenly that concept was being outlawed by the powers that be! I suppose similiar to how smoking is being condemned nowadays! The lifestyle of mixing business with pleasure was slowly being irradicated. Even the social side of soldiering was being frowned upon, especially when Alcohol was concerned. Nowadays where political correctness and sexual orientation are the prime elements, where soldiering takes a back seat! No wonder why the morale within the Army of today is so low!....I consider that majority of us were very fortunate to have served when we did! I think that I for one, wouldn't like all the restrictions imposed on our squaddies in these so called enlightened times! What say you?........

Out Of Bounds -- Topper, 01:12:00 10/04/05 Tue [1]

Talking about the RMP...I grew up in Lippstadt, as well as being stationed there later. I recall we were quite cocky with the GCP, as they uaually hated dealing with Brits. We used to be scared stiff if we saw an RMP patrol though!. When I left 27 I joined the RMP, and I must say, its great fun to watch from the other side. I always found that having been a 'GRUNT!', you were able to laugh and let the guys get on with it, although the RMP had direct entrants, Lance Cpls at the age of 18, well...no understanding of the Army, you can understand the problems.
I remember being stationed in Detmold as Duty Sgt, and 2 LCPls locked up a full screw for insubordination. I spoke to the full screw and asked why he had been abusive, he said they had called him a CROW. The LCPLs were very young, and obviously no experience. I let the full screw go and boll***** the other two. So I suppose what Im saying, not all of them were bad, and boy they were a lot faster when I joined....well faster than Spike on the BFT!

OUT OF BOUNDS -- SMUDGE, 12:40:52 10/03/05 Mon [1]

Me again

Jim the pub name you want next to the Dortmunder is the KROMBACHER, on the other side of the road is the Bird Cage, Lindenhof, 20 yards further down, all still open, less for the Dortmunder which has shut down, used to do a DJ stint in there at weekends.

The ear biteing episode i believe was in the Spiel Casino, 27 Regt, not 56 or HQ, Did i read somewhere that you come from Southampton !!!!!!!!

One to get you guessing if you wanted a beer mat from Johnnie what record did he ask you to play on the Juke box in return.

Hope my Grandchildren never read this site, !!!!!!!!!

can any of you lads remember when there was some trouble in one of the bars down the town and someone from the regiment bit some germans ear off.the SIB came to the camp the next day with the blokes family and the RSM had us all on an identification parade.i dont know if they caught whoever done it but we was all suspects.

OUT OF BOUNDS -- Ian Smudge Smith, 12:00:56 10/02/05 Sun [1]

If you were picked up by the RMP you just prayed that the train barriers were down, easy to escape from an RMP Landrover, they could not run so fast in No 2 Dress either. The Polizie, now that was a different ball game.

Out of bounds pubs & Clubs, The Kartoon, Meeting, Strand Hotel, did anyone ever get into Club eight. The Metropol, the art of makeing that free beer last 4 hours, Greek Bar, Spiel Casino and yes ANGELO was Johnnies brother.

I would also like to make a belated apology for singing songs as i staggered past 23 Battery block on way to bed every night for 6 years

Smudge, I owe you a bottle of Weissenburg for remembering the Name of the Strand Hotel. Used to frequent that particular haunt with Jock Clarke and Patterson and a few other of the lads. As well as those other places that you mentioned. Can you remember the Name of the Greek Bar just past Ray and Helga's 'Dortmunder' on Sud Strasse? The amount of 'Ouzo' and Metaxa Brandy that I consummed in them days, makes me wonder how the hell that I remember anything of those days of our mispent youth!........
When people ask me "What did you do in the Army?"....I usually reply, "Propped some Bar counter up!".....And they think that I'm only joking! Fact is stranger than Fiction!
Don't you think?

'Out of Bounder's' -- Jim Martin, 06:41:45 10/02/05 Sun [2]

Who can remember those 'Out of Bounds' establishments, that most of us had a tendancy to visit in the Town?
Also those fearless RMP patrols that used to have a purge every now and again to check and remove us Gun bunnies caught in these den's of depravity. That Nightclub in the centre of town used to be a favourite haunt. Once, collared we were herded out of there onto the back of a four tonner to be taken back to Camp. Whereupon the monkey~wagon used to follow us up, and everytime we slowed down or stopped our guys used to jump out and leg~it in all directions. I think the only body the RMP managed to get to the Guardroom was some poor slob, who was so paralytic drunk he had fallen asleep in the back!......Those were the days!
Can anybody remember the Name of the Nightclub in question?
And No lads, it wasn't the Metropol.....Any idea's?

Hi Pete, yes you are indeed correct about the Post~Coach being 'Out of Bounds' also I regret, the Capri Bar was!
On returning back to the Regiment around '81 I was shocked to find that a hell of a lot of Bar's that I used to frequent were indeed Out of Bounds to British Soldiers!
Do not know if this had anything to do in regards moving certain elements of the Black Watch from Verl to Bokenforde or what?......As far as I'm aware, that we never had a problem with the 'Scallies' in the years that I was there!....Lippstadt was not like any other Garrison town that I know of in regards trouble! Basically non-existant as far as I was concerned.
Spike, I remember the Stadtshanker on the one way circuit.
A lot of German students used to go there as well as Bikers and squaddies. The place I was on about was somewhere up a back street in the centre of town. Another popular haunt used to be a Greek Bar located on the far side of town. And for the life of me, can't remember the Name of that Bar either!.....Such is Life!

OUT OF BOUNDS -- SPIKE, 06:56:12 10/02/05 Sun [1]

Jim the only club i remember is the STADTSHANKER spelling wrong i expect. That was in the town by the park.
And yes the MP'S picked me up one day as they did'nt liked the way i dressed and marched me back to camp abusing me.Ha Ha.
What they did'nt realise was that my german mate who was with me at the time spoke fluent english and understood everything that went on.
I think they both got the deepest sh;;;;t they could get into.
