Depends on what day it is. A couple of days ago there was a rocket attack about a mile down the road. Killed 1 and injured 1 (both Norwegians). It is a road that we and everyone else in the Kabul area use daily.

Yesterday I had to go to Bagram for a meeting and it was a really boring drive.

Most days are quiet, broken up by our mission of supporting the Afghan National Army. They and the rest of the country have come a long way, especially looking at the construction and cleaning up that is going on. The difference is astounding.

One of the best things about being over here has been working with the orphanage and schools. We don't get to go out to them very often, security is always a concern. The joy on their faces when they receive our gifts is a true blessing. Tracy Deeds has been a tremendous help with what she has gathered and sent, as well as other friends, my office, and my family. Hopefully, before we leave there will be an established link between the camp and either UNICEF or another organization to keep channeling supplies.

It is hot and dry during the day and the difference in temps make it feel cool, even cold, at night. They have had more rain since we've been here than they had been averaging for a full year. Several of the locals have said, "Before the Americans, Allah punished us for the Taliban with no rain. Now, because of the Americans, He blesses us with rain."

There are still a lot of problems here, not everyone likes us, and we don't know when we'll get home. But I feel like we have made a good difference in many lives.

Drive careful,
John
