By no means am I saying we should not support our current athletes. I am saying the exact opposite. It would be great if they wished to compete into their 30's, by all means that is certainly possible. I just want their to be a support mechanism (BSF) in place in the event they decide they want to make a run for the games at the age of 24 or 28 (7-11 years).

You are right in saying childrens motor skills develop later than 6. But when you have a lot kids swimming at a young age you know more than a few will swim out a good career. It is a known fact that many kids lose interest as they approach their teens. If you start out with 100 six and unders and end up with 15 when they reach the senior age group we have done well. Besides, I think it's a lot easier to develop a competetive swimmer at a younger age than trying to get a more mature one off the basketball or tennis court, track or soccer field.

Imagine a Nationals with 500 or 1000 athletes where every event has heats and finals. The stands would be a lot fuller the competitevness a lot keener. You may even see a few old foggies out there too because 50m events have been introduced. It would make for a truly exhilerating experience.

All I wish to bring to light is that swimmings numbers are rapidly declining. What is the BSF doing about it?
