- Why Should Your Child be a Swimmer? -- USA Swimming, Tuesday July 08 2008 [3] (NoHost/24.231.32.166)
Why Should My Child Be a Swimmer?
1.
Swimming is an outstanding activity for young people.
2.
Swimming promotes fitness and teaches a child to strive for physical achievement. Many super-stars in other sports started out as swimmers and gained strength and coordination that helped them to excel.
3.
Swimming is an exciting individual and team sport.
4.
Swimming is a technical and specialized activity involving extensive skill development.
5.
Swimming is a healthy "lifetime" activity. Participants may be 1 or 101 years old.
6.
Swimming is relatively injury free in comparison to other youth sports.
7.
Swimming teaches the life lessons of sport and sportsmanship which include learning to deal with winning and losing, as well as working with officials, teammates and coaches.
8.
Swimming motivates participants to strive for self improvement and teaches goal orientation.
9.
Swimming cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem.
10.
Swimming can prevent drowning.
Did you know?
Drowning is a leading killer of American children.
In ethnic communities, drowning rates are nearly three times the national average.
More than 30% of kids are at risk for obesity-related illnesses.
Swimming is a cure.
Key Questions
While winning is nice, while setting a record, getting a best time, or making a qualifying time feels good, we hope that our young athletes learn more than “it is great to swim fast”. No where in human history or theology do we learn that the ability to swim fast holds a very high priority in the grand scheme of the universe. From a practical standpoint, over-emphasis on speed, times and achievements will eventually end in frustration. No matter how fast a young athlete swims, there will probably be another swimmer in the next town, state, or country, swimming faster, if not now, then next month. So as coaches and parents, ask yourselves:
¨ Did the child learn to swim with more skill this past season so he or she is both stronger and safer in the water?
¨ Did the child learn to exhibit initiative, wanting to come to the pool and do the practice without having to be constantly pushed or prodded by parents and coaches?
¨ Did the child learn something about unselfishness, sacrificing his or her personal wants for the good of others or the team?
¨ Did the child benefit from the competitive experience, learning how to handle winning and losing in our competitive society?
¨ Did the child learn more patience in overcoming obstacles, setbacks and problems?
¨ Did the child learn empathy?
In a few years, the medals and ribbons will be laid aside and best times will be a hazy memory. The friendships that will develop and the life skills learned will carry on for a lifetime.

Long day at that pool with no compensation for the little kids.

Great questions about info posted on the website. The BSF is interested in all Bahamian swimmers abroad and have an open door policy to receiving info from any swimmer to share with the rest of the swimming commuity. Please send your info in with your picture in swimming action or a favorite head shot so we can together keep updated and informed.
The comments posted on the website about parents paying etc. are immature and negative.....and untrue.
The BSF address is bsf_news@yahoo.com.....send us your info whoever you are.....also a reminder to all swimmers abroad remember to keep current with your BSF membership.....this also helps the organization keep track of Bahamian swimmers!
Well done whoever you are......the BSF awaits your info!

- Future of Swimming -- E. L., Wednesday March 12 2008 [1] (NoHost/24.231.48.65)
It is obvious from this board that there are alot of issues concerning swimming. I wonder if the young local swimmers will remain motivated enough to stay in the sport. For a person to be good at swimming it requires a whole lot of dedication, practice, time and effort.
I aggree with some of the last posts on this site. All swimmers, Juniors, Seniors and College students should all feel appreciated. After all there would be no Federation without them. Juniors need encouragement too because they are our future.
I hope hope there would soon be some changes so we can have much deserved progress in swimming in this country.
We only hear about swimming in the news and papers when it's time for CARIFTA. ZNS only talk about swimming at CARIFTA time. What about all those meets that swimmers work so hard to improve their times to get there?
IT TAKES ALOT OF YEARS AND PRACTICE TO GET TO CARIFTA and the OYMPICS.
I am one that is interested in the future of the sport especially since my kids swim. We have alot of talented young swimmers that might make big waves in the water in a few years.
Lets work together to make it better.

Volunteers -- Swim Fan, Saturday March 01 2008 [1] (NoHost/24.244.136.123)
All of the BSF work is done by a group of volunteers who have given and continue to give considerable time and effort to support the development of aquatics in the country. All stakeholders have a part to play and that includes others in the swimming community who have expertise or other means to support the BSF athletes.
Our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean are doing a great service and we should commend them for this. The individual working the web site in Jamaica may be supported financially by the Jamaican Government and the Jamaican NOC. The same could be done here(?) There is definitely an opportunity for an enterprising individual to develop an electronic vehicle to share all sporting accomplishments in the Bahamas.

- records -- friendly, Friday February 22 2008 [8] (NoHost/24.231.38.112)
I would like to see some records double check in the website. If you check the boys 8 and under 50m breast open record, 38.41 and a 7 year old did it at the time. Very questionable. The best boy in 2004 that we send to Carifta at the time his time was 40.00. So, you know it is impossible for a 7 year old to do 38.41. If so, we should have sent him to Carifta that year regardless of age, I mean, he could have made history at the time.Regardless the same record holder now can only qualify to go to Carifta with 39 seconds and change and he is now 11 years old. WOW......
It is not fair because that means that record will be there forever without anyone getting even close to it.
It tell us as parents how to question sometimes the sanity of those who were working with records at the time or the sanity of the famous Colorado system.Great point to be consider for the future.

I am concerned about what seems to be a deletion of a swimmer's name and results from the last Barracudas Swim Meet. I do not know whether the person complaining was the parent or not but I think if a swimmer came out and compete in 6 events my God, at least one event should have been posted! I really do not have an answer as to how it could happen , but it is very peculiar. I would advise you to check on the Barricuda's site for a proper reading, because since you posted your inquires, I could not download the meet results from BSF.

When your coach goes to an International meet with your team, they should use exclusively the Bahamian uniform or just neutral clothes. Wearing a uniform from another country on deck while representing The Bahamas, it is not profesional at all. Something to be consider in a positive manner.

The new swimming season is here. We already had the first swimming meet and only 4 officials were present.
I do think all the officials should come and help during the entire year not just for Nationals. The hosting club should have their officials on deck, so the meet could run efficiently.
The same way the get the timers together, they should ask their certified officials to be on deck.
Let's work together, it is an Olympic year for our swimmers.

BSF in my opinion is correct. No country in the world will sent coaches with no exposure and dedication to the sport to represent thier country at the Olympic level.
If you want a Nation to trust you with their best, first attend every clinic, also dedicate extra time to improve yourself academically and sport wise and without any question you will be selected.
BSF promotes all the time their own, specially for Internationa meets.
When a club does not trust you and find new people to run their business, How BSF could do so?
Good question.
Coach Andy represents the best and he has earned his way in the sport, just try to match it, and you will be selected.

Nationals 2008 -- winner, Saturday September 15 2007 [1] (NoHost/24.244.136.114)
Please BSF find a date for this year Nationals early in the season that is good for all the swimmers. After this year it is proven May is not the best month to host the event.
To early in the season, many students had important exams and some were not able to swim morning sessions and of course neither evenings.
Pushing Nationals early to accomodate away swimmers is not wise. At the end some of them did not compete for some reason.
In my opinion it is the most important event in the BSF calendar, it is the meet that all the junior swimmers work hard all year long to participate in and all of them should be participants, including Freeport swimmers too.
Just something to be taken in consideration.

Its not that easy my friend. There are no swimmers on the council nor do we attend technical meetings. The best we can do is hope and trust the BSF makes the best decisions that will help us do what we need to do. And in the meantime, just ignore people (such as the person 2 messages below) who know little about the sport, parents who know nothing yet still try to coach from the stands, and basically those hating out of jealousy. If we know the truth about ourselves, who can tell us anything different?

Swimmers.....of all ages speak up against the premeditated destructive message that appears below....understand that this type of verbal harrasment is most often related to a person who has serious personal, family and social problems.
This being said you still should not allow this type of predator to get away with foolishness - know you all have strong voices that need to be heard and use this constructivly.
A suggestion to consider is to have a male and female swimmer representative as part of the BSF council - you know alot about your sport and could make a very positive impact -
For far to long people have gotten away with these pathetic verbal attacks and MUST be stopped!

- Congrats and give it a rest -- Vereance Burrows and Inoa Charlton (sigh tsk tsk), Tuesday July 03 2007 [1] (NoHost/64.150.215.189)
since no one else wants to say it, congratulations to ALL swimmers that participated at the CCCAN games, it was the most medals Bahamas has ever received at any CCCAN.
In response to useless ranting by CCCAN parent, give it a rest, the 15-17 boys incident. One simple wave to the crowd has somehow turned to a story where everyone apparently danced on the blocks, waved to the crowd on every flip turn, swam slow, convinced the younger swimmers to do the same and destroyed team morale. Sadly, this is the story that made its way home. The CCCAN referees did not punish the team nor disqualify the relay, so obviously it wasn't that big of a deal to them and anyone else. The issue has BEEN dead and we continued with the meet smoothly. Its just a small group of people keeping it alive, making it grow and dragging it along.
We knew it would only be a matter of time before a parent ran to this message board. Speaking as assistant coaches for the CCCAN trip ( as Mr Bell appointed Teisha Vereance and noa )I feel as if this matteris gettig blown up wayyyy to much and taken to far. Yes the boys did something very stupid and were told off by several parents and the coach and even by me after the race. If the people at CCCAN are over it and even Mr Bell why is this still an issue ??? Do you wish to suspend the boys from swimming forever or something ???? There is too much politics in swimming. The fact that the news about the relay traveled so fast back home is beyond us. The boys admitted they were wrong and said they were sorry and the issue should be over......talking about the 15-17 boys must be dealt with wow...lets not live in the past parents and look towards the future. If your child gets a bad grade in school would you still taunt them about it after they already learn they lesson and its a DEAD issue ?????
We are very fortunate to have a doctor to sacrifice his time to travel to foreign countries to make sure we say in stable health. I know everytime I have traveled with the team, something has happened to me and I had to be saved by the team Doctor. Sometime before we even get sick, Dr. Lightbourne knows our history so well, he is able to treat us properly early. For example, he can name all the swimmers who have weak stomachs, asthma, or sinus problems etc. Changing a Doctor wouldn't hurt, but the reason to do so is petty like most of the anonymous message.
And you could not end your message any better with no excuse for an adult to interfere with a swimmer. That includes YOU parents. Majority of you know NOTHING about swimming and your gossip in the stands about other swimmers, coaches and staff only hurts and divides the team. I am speaking from experience. Leave swimming to the swimmers, coaching to the coaches, doctoring to the actual person who spent as many years as your child has been alive learning how to keep your child healthy for a week.
Once again, Congrats to all, and to the girls, you did well as a relay team, don't let anyone tell you different or let politics get in between us as a team. Leave all this squawking to those who choose to be ignorant, let us continue swimming with our ears closed as we have for years. its just sad that the kids have to see this behavior, unlike us seniors who have already become numb to such foolishness. Who has more influence on the kids anyway, parents or a team member that waved to the crowd?

To the master swimmers: you are really setting a good example to the rest of BSF swimmers. They realized is a good sport and could go beyond their best days.
I also good like to see pictures from Nationals in this website, from children of all the clubs. We have to make sure they get the credit they deserve: Barracudas children,Seabees children, Dolphins children,YMCA, Freport Aquatics, etc.
This will be an incentive for them to keep working hard on the pool.
We need to spray around the advertising for everyone equally, not just one club.It showed at this year National printing book.
Always the best and I know we will do well at CCCAN and PAN AM Games, the best to Alana, Ariel, Verence, etc.The best to all the swimmers who will represent us this year internationally.

- swimming in general -- know it all, Saturday February 03 2007 [3] (NoHost/65.75.84.181)
it has been a long time since i have made a post on this site. my time in swimming has been long
i have read some of the post that were put up by the swimmers and i am in agreement with what most of them have said.
the cuts for pan ams. it is unfortunate that they were changed but it worked out better for the females. i think that those not knowing need to look at the last 3 pan am results and understand that some of those girls have an opprutunity to get a second swim with their now personal best times. the asua times were based on results of previous meets and i think people need to understand that at these meets only 2 can come from each country. it is an opprutinity for swimmers to experince a high level of competition without all the pressure.
the disparity between the best men and the others and the best women and the others is much less. that is why the times are faster for them.
mistakes may have been made with the cuts for the higher level meets but there have never been this much swimmers in different events acheiving such high levels of performance in the sport. so there has to be adjustments by the decision makers to ensure that all have the best opprotunity without embarrassing the fedreation.
look at what the pan ams did for alana dillette; she has continued to improve because she now understands what has to be done to be the best.
apart from jeremy, right now, their is not a lot in the pipeline with regards to the men. there are a few holding down the fort and the others need time to mature. some of them are swimming fast but are they swimming as fast as some of the boys back in the day? they have some huge shoes to fill. you had to swim 24.6 back in the day to make a 50fr final at nationals. allan murry can come back and win 5ofr at nationals 2006. yes, the boys have plenty work to do, and they need to work.
parents, you need to stop babying the boys, as some of our top senior boys are being beaten by senior girls in their best events. that is a no no. lets get it together.
oh! nationals in may, an absolute step backward for swimming. we have over 300 swimmers in the federation and we are basing our main meet on about 10 seniors who have to go to pan ams.
from the last time i remember, people usually come to see the younger swimmers as their races have been much more exciting.
or, have we catered to a minority of ex-pat children, that usullay go home before the best date, which is the independence holiday wekend. their schools close early and do not have to do government exams because they are not subsidized. again, just a few.
what about the effect it is going to have on the swimmers that went to carifta about a month earlier? oh boy! some of us know so little about swimming, a taper and the effects of a taper on perfamce shortly after. ask the swimmers that went to cisc, did nationals, and cac. swam like crap at cac because it was too far from their initial taper for cisc. we are looking at possibly 36 swimmers with this same time frame possibly not swimming wellat the "may" nationals.
i can't forget the poor folks in freeport who probbaly will not come, or will be very small. they have their reasons as they have been living in that environment and understand their parameters. rumor has it, some of their top swimmers will not make the trip, exams are important!
boy would i like to put my name, but swimmers, i got ya back! gents, keep swimming hard by training hard. haters are only motivation, do not let anyone give you anything in swimming. TAKE WHAT YOU WANT BECAUSE THEY CAN'T TAKE IT FORM YOU!
comeback! hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Swimming in General and May Nationals -- Bluegrass, Sunday January 28 2007 [1] (NoHost/24.231.32.7)
The Nationals date for 2007 was debated by all Clubs and Coaches and put to a vote.....the May date was selected.
It is not a "perfect" date......every date fell short of meeting all the criteria considered for a date selection.....
but in the end May was selected fby the majority of Clubs for this year.
Let's all try and work together and make it work......
Perhaps it is time for a Junior Short Course Nationals .....and a BAHAMAS Open/Senior Nationals Long Course.....

Wow, I am shocked and appalled at the responses of the Parent for many years. I agree with Inoa on his modest reply to such a vulgar display of the defamtions that took place on this message board. I am quite surprised and pleased with Inoas ability to remain mature and above the situation at hand unlike others in previous responses. Yes the girls times are quite slow, BUT as everyone knows, ASUA set the times and we must live with them. We as swimmers know that if our males swam their cuts, they would be in good contention with the rest of the competition. But unfortunately on the girls side, going the "A" times listed will surely not make it into finals or even semifinals/consoles. And for that reason, we beleive the times by ASUA are not mediocre, but just unbalanced. Parent, please remain a parent and not a swim politician. Its rude comments like yours that has brought and is still bringing our younger male swimmers down and ruin dreams.
"""IF they want to compete in the Pan Am Games. Instead of whining about the time standards, why not jump in the pool and try to catch up with male swimmers all over the Pan Am Area. If you put half that energy into your training, you might just be able to qualify"""
This statement was truly uncalled for. Personally, i cannot believe that a parent actually quoted this and didnt own up to it. We male swimmers(especially those abroad) train just as hard as those in the Pan Am area. And to the comment of "cathing up" to other males, we are obviously an extremely young team. Myself being only 17, Ashton 18, and Inoa just turning 19. Swimming is a sport that takes an enormous amount of rigoruos training and time just to make a small improvement. But improvements are steadily done over time throughout life. Unlike girls who are extremely fast at younger ages but slowly fade away in improvements as time rolls by. So parent, if you were a swimmer, you would have known this, but since you are "just" a parent, please keep the insults to a minimum and the encouragement needs to increase. Thank you all, God bless, and remember to set good examples for our children.

As you can see I am not afraid to leave my name here seeing that I was told My name was mentioned several times on this site about time standards. All I have to say is that yes the Pan Ams times are difficult but myself as an athlete/person can not change that. The only way to change that is to work harder and do so in the pool. Yes I agree that the Girls times are a heck of alot slower but as members of the bsf said they did not set the times. Another thing people who are leaving messages on this site should watch their tone and whom they are directing ther comments about..I noticed a parent talking about "the male swimmers" and grouping all the male swimmers together as one just because one decided to speak up...we are all adults here...choose your words wisely and grow up. To all the male swimmers out there , dont let all this politics keep us down all we can do is train even harder and show that Mens swimming in The Bahamas is still there. Good Luck to all and HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Times -- pool?, Monday January 08 2007 [3] (NoHost/65.75.124.91)
I think before we go on this website making unfair acussations we should use common sense. Please do not forget the entire world could open this website and think we are not an united federation. That is not true at all.
BSF has agreed to use the A cut times across the board for females and males for PAN AM Games as the standard for our swimmers to go to that meet. The truth is the national standards times for females and males that our federation set up previously are higher than those required for PAN AM Games. Check time standars in this website and you will see it is true. BSF lower the standard to PAN AM A cut qualifiying times so more swimmers could go and get more international exposure.
A swimmer at this level at least should made the A cut so it could represent this country at the highest level.
Mediocrity should never be our International standard.
Male and females swimmers should understand that work and perseverance always pay off.
At least that is the standard I have for my kids even with school work.
The girl times from earlier age are always harder to go to International meets like Plantation, even for our own Nationals( check 8 and under and 9-10 times qualifying times for nationals in this website) because they develop earlier than the boys. At a later age the boys are stronger and faster that is why their times are harder. Check any international website by age group and you will see it is a fact.
The best to all our swimmers. Let them be the reason for the season.
Happy New Year to all of the swimmers, coaches, officials, parents and anyone that love the sport of swimming and any other.
Pool?

Nationals -- Excited Swimmer, Monday January 08 2007 [1] (71-80-32-10.static.kgpt.tn.charter.com/71.80.32.10)
Hello Everyone
I miss swimming in the Bahamas a lot and that is the reason for this question. I am away to school and was wondering if it is possible for me to swim for nationals? I am training over in the U.S. and can make alot of time standards but is there anyway I can qualify for Nationals without actually being present at any meets. I could be there a week before Nationals but it isnt possible to leave before that. Hopefully I can swim.
Thanks

Re: Time Standards -- Innocent Bystanders (Concerned), Saturday December 30 2006 [2] (NoHost/24.231.58.195)
Outside source brought some very startling facts to my attention and hopefully to those of the BSF. We all agree that our girls are much stronger in scoring than our males have been in the past, but does that mean we should completely shut them out? Why not do the opposite, focus on the boys to bring them up and maybe they will enjoy swimming, join or continue swimming. This federation has been depleting our male numbers especially senior wise. Is Chris still swimming, I see he qualified in one race for Pan Ams; he is the last backstroking male in the country. And Ashton has been considering retirement due to outrageous time standards, Inoa has been shut out of meets he rightfully earned a place on CAC(not the BSF's fault) carifta 05 (BSF's fault). And Travano and his shoulder are in our prayers, and I am sure his injury was to blame for his performance at CAC. But do we have any younger swimmers coming up? Vereance is our best hope to develop into a senior swimmer, and John Bradley Jr has great potential for developing into a decent distance freestyler. So far, that’s only two, and I don’t believe we are showing our younger athletes, especially males, enough support to stay into the sport. Carifta 07 is John’s first year in 15-17 and Vereance’s last year. I also notice that Vereance is developing into a decent butterflyer and has a world championship time but is being cut out of Pan Am’s. I believe these swimmers are being shut out because a certain somebody is afraid that they are getting closer to beating Jeremy, even though Inoa and Vereance both specialize in races Jeremy does not. Seems selfish to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if Vereance is shut out of going to World Champs and Inoa not being selected for other meets.. Both of these swimmers are away in school, are we keeping in contact with them? Are we calling them and letting them know we support them, are we watching their meets and calling them to congratulate them on their performances? No we aren’t. Another question, are these swimmers on any type of financial aid, or is that only available to the females and Jeremy? After this Carifta, I fear for the young men left, Jevaughn, Denaj, and Barrington, what happened to our boys of 2004? There is a huge gap in male swimming. There is Jeremy, Travano, Inoa, Vereance, John, and then it shoots down to Evante and Matthew who are doing quite well. This federation started off on the right foot but has grown biased and forgot their true mission for our youth athletes. By unbalanced and outrageous time standards, it’s obviously the girls are getting the royals treatments. Why not be fair and balanced and give our young men a chance. The glory of a girl’s Olympic relay has blinded us from what we truly stand for.

BSF Time Standards/ Nationals Date -- An Outside Source (?), Thursday December 21 2006 [1] (NoHost/63.245.125.188)
First I would like to congradulate all of the swimmers who have been swimming well so far this swim season and may you continue to do so. I have been very much involved with swimming from the outside looking in for many years, and I must say this Federation has had its better days.
As I reviewed the BSF Time Standards, I grew very confused and puzzled. I thought the goal of the BSF was to set attainable time standards for the swimmers to strive for. Yes the BSF is on the right track with the Girls times but as far as the boys go, no. I know the BSF would like to send as many people as possible to Pan Ams for experience and to get the swimmeres out there, but it is very obvious that the girls are being favoured alot more than the boys. For example, why is it that the Commonwealth times for the girls SECONDS slower than the Pan Ams times ????? But the Boys Pan Ams times are faster than the Commonwealth ? HOW is it possible that the girls CAC times almost mirror the Pan Ams times ? But the Boys Pan Ams times are faster than the Commonwealth ? HOW is it possible that the girls CAC times almost mirror the Pan Ams times ? Is it the BSF's goal to send a FULL team of girls along with Jeremey ? I know the girls have been improving alot over the years, but to make times so simple for them to make defeats the purpose. This is the reason why most male swimmers discontinue swimming after the Carifta age. One can count on one hand the amount of boys still swimming over 17....Travano McPhee, Inoa Charlton, Ashton Knowles , and the list stops there. The whole point of this letter is to alert the BSF that the people are not stupid and there is a problem with the times that you set. If you go on any other countries website ( links can be found on the bsf website ) you can see that the times vary drastically and its ridiculous. Some of the Pan Ams times for the girls are CARIFTA times for other countries but our males times are JUST shy of our olympic cuts. The BSF made the male times so that if one makes the times they will make finals or possibly medal. But the girls times are NOT made so and this is not fair. This meet should be used for the swimmers to gain experience and to compete on different levels.

- barracudas meet -- happy (sad), Saturday November 25 2006 [3] (NoHost/65.75.104.12)
Congratulations to The Barracudas Swimming Club. They had a good meet last weekend. I want to ask BSF officials please to check with the people in charge around the pool. The water last week was really cold.
Could the kids do best times before the move up on age group under such conditions?I doubt it. I know the people in charge around that pool know better. There is a total disregard about this matter. In my opinion the children are training very hard to qualify for local and international meets and their efforts will not go to far under such conditions. I know some athletes in different clubs do much better times in practice that they did in competition last week.
Could you imagine athletes in the U.S.A swimming in such conditions?
We should all remember we have swimmers training at that pool every day with International standard times and then when they loose Carifta first place by a point or two we want to tell them ,Oh you did not try hard enough, etc...
But these little things are the ones who get them disolutioned on the long run.
Well BSF officials winter season is here,so please do your job for our kids.
Just a point. I hope is well taken.

Well parents do not worry anymore about the cold water. I was told by the pool management this week that the american swimmers are coming as usual the first week in December. I know the heater is going to be turn on this week, so those preferential swimmers could enjoy our beautiful facilities. When we will care about our swimmers?
I do not know but I hope one day soon.

Boarding schools are not as easy as we are often led to believe...check out this article written by a boarder at St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, Fla. featured in Swimming World Magazine: (just copy and past the link below in your browser)
http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/lane9/news/12395.asp
Also...I agree with the parents concern about the pool temperature; and unless every parent involves their club in forcing the BSF and the pool management (the Government) to address this, it will remain the status quo.

I have to agree with happy. Did you see what kind of wheater we have today?
Do you think we should let our 7 and 8 years old swimm in that big pool. I am very dissapointed about this issue. May be we should invite the BSF president to come down from Puerto Rico and enjoy a swim at that pool.
Now I join the person in point well taken.

- NATIONALS DATE -- Be inclusive....not "excluding", Thursday September 28 2006 [1] (NoHost/24.244.159.106)
The Bahamas National Swimming Championship date is to be recommended by the Technical Committee for approval by Council. The date preferred by the Coaches is the July long weekend.....unfortunatly this date has for the previous several years conflicted with the regional and continental swimming championships such as CISC, CCCAN, CAC and Pan Am Games. While these events do not involve the majority they do involve many of the junior and senior elite swimmers who have worked through many National Championships and other meets to qualify themselves for these competitions.
This date does however nicely coincide with the Clubs learn to swim and age group competitive programmes final few weeks of instruction and training before a much deserved "summer break". This competition offers a real goal for many young swimmers to work towards throughout the three or four preceeding months.
In order to put the best foot forward for the future of the sport it seems obvious that the entire swimming family including age group, junior and senior elite and masters swimmers should be accomodated at the Bahamas National Swimming Championships.
Finding this date isn't an easy task....but surely there must be one time during the twelve month calendar that is free from academics considerations, regional, continental and world swimming events and "cold weather".
The BSF must also consider the necessary support received from generous private and public institutions......that make the Nationals and National teams a reality.....to exclude any swimmer knowing in advance that there is a legitimate conflict already on the calendar because they are few in number shouldn't be OK.....with Coaches, Clubs, swimmers or Parents.....let us FIND the date that works for all.

- Controversy -- Dissapointed, Tuesday September 12 2006 [6] (NoHost/24.244.151.200)
This message is obviously about the controversial selection for the CARIFTA team for 2005 in Curacao. How is it that all of a sudden when a certain clubs becomes a club again, the majority of their swimmers are chosen over someone else's? Let's take this group by group. 11-12 girls: a new swimmer has suddenly come into the light out of nowhere and who is she? Is she any good? Yes. Is she Swift? Questionable. But even more important is she Bahamian and does her information match the BSF rules that are so often bended and looked over for SOME swimmers? 11-12 boys: No comment. 13-14 girls: Most of the persons chosen were expected but the 5th and final selection was DEFINITELY a problem. Were 6 swimmers for such a strong age group not considered? And furthermore, did the last swimmer make a "successful" time in which she dominated two other swimmer? And what about the Oh-so-important relays which we get most of our points? You can't win a relay with 800 free. The BSF needs to ask themselves which is more important, 1 or 18 points? 13-14 boys: No comment. 15-17 girls: No comment. 15-17 boys: This is the second time that a swimmer has been cheated out of a National team and this time another "outside" swimmer blocked his place. Also a senior was beat out by a junior, again , of the same 'mystery' club that surprisingly MOST swimmers beat out.
All in all, no wonder competitive swimming is taking such a fall if the BSF allows such foolishness! And some of the strongest swimmers are getting the door slammed in their faces while other swimmers are getting a V.I.P. introduction to what others worked so hard for.

First, I would like to thank and congratulate all the swimmers, officials and BSF for such a good meet. Thank you to the sponsors because without them this meet would have not been succesful. We are more mature and there was not controversy previous to the meet.
Only one complaint, persons in charge should conduct themselves properly. Mistreating officials just because they are beginners is not going to help. We have the power at the end of the day when X time comes and you will have not choice but to seat back next to your families on the stands all over again.
So for some people, please is not to long now so enjoy the last of your days.

THERE HAS TO BE CONCERN AND YOU MAKE MANY VALID POINTS. THE TIME STANDARDS ARE SET BY THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE....THE COACHES. ASK THEM ,THEY CAN MAKE THE CHANGE...AND SHOULD. THE CISC, NATIONALS, CAC BACK TO BACK MEET SITUATION WAS FLATLY REJECTED AS A CONSIDERATION BY MOST OF THE CLUBS AND SOME EVEN SAID THAT SWIMMERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO ALL THREE BACK TO BACK...... THOSE WHO ARE SWIMMING BOTH CISC AND CAC MAY CONSIDER OPTING OUT OF NATIONALS....THERE ARE ALSO MANY SWIMMERS WHO CAN'T EVEN MAKE NATIONALS 2006 BECAUSE OF THE LATE CHANGE...

um...i have two things to say. One why are the cac times so much harder than those from other countries, and why are they the same time standards for pan am as cac...isn't pan am a faster meet? Secondly how do you expect us swimmer to come back from cisc, go to nationals in five days and then cac in seven days. I don't kno if you officals are aware of this, but that is IMPOSSIBLE for any swimmer to that and be able to swim best times, since when is nationals after cisc. It should have been fixed a long time ago but now its to late

I do not know who is more happy that this year nationals are finally over, the swimmers, the officials or the parents.
I was thinking I had seen a lot in this country until we reach this year nationals.
I know unfortunately some people will sleep good but one day it will catch up with them.
Still many swimmers participated that they did not qualify but how there is a GOD for all of us they made a fool of themselves individually as they were not really to the standard required.
They gave some points to SWIFT to win and steal that high point trophy from the Barracudas swimming club but individually they showed lack of training and good fellowship.
This kind of swimmers will not make it in the future when pressure rises and they will not have the coaches to continue to lie for them.
Thank God I have a talented swimmer and the future looks very bright for her, simply because she works very hard to achieve her goals and she has a very good coach.
The rest I leave it to Jesus, no to a pastor, no to a deacon but to Jesus.
a good swimming fan.

There is considerable expertise in many areas available to this organization......now if the personalities could put aside their own "quirks" it might just be amazing to see what could be accomplished!
Moving ahead will take (as it always has)alot of hard work driven by the best "practice" in and out of the pool.....there are many viewpoints that need to be considered in every area that will help to develop aquatics throughout the country. There is a huge amount of information available about best "practice" for all involved in the aquatics world - for the athlete no matter what age and stage, for the Coach - no matter what prior expertise, for the Parent of any age or stage of child, for Officials, for the "volunteer" administrative body that governs the sport, for the Government Ministry and the BOA who also are very supportive and instrumental in the advancement of the sport.
I challenge all who are involved in the Bahams Swimming Federation to ask themselves before they speak - is it true? is it necessary? is it kind? will it improve on the silence? will it move the collective "us" forward in a manner of which we can honestly say we have through our actions selected the best way forward?
We have so much to be grateful for.........but honesty with ourselves first and then as a group is the only way that we can move this Federation forward....this is not a competition between clubs, coaches, islands or other interested persons.....this is a journey that can only be successful through collaboration and co-operation of all concerned....there is much to be acomplished......and it can be done with positive and forward thinking contributions from all......
There is much water that has past under the bridge....and that it the point to remember it has past.....moving forward wisely will mean that learning has resulted from the mistakes........if there are complaints.....move on them with feasible solutions.....PLEASE don't just be miserable for the sake of misery......the world already has enough of that to go around......
Mr. President please remove any remarks that are derogatory and/or personal in nature....this is not the forum for these remarks. Please contributors govern your remarks accordinly.
Let us create a discussion on this board that puts forth reasoned and positive contributions to the advancement of the sport.....

It was also great to see so many 18+ swimmers in the water......many of whom compete for their universities and colleges! They are to be congratulated for staying involved....perhaps they will be the start of a masters swimming movement..long overdue.
Ignore the petty politics. In youth sports its inevitable....its actually fun to see who will be the next person, person(s) or organization to make a fool out of themselves......its a toss up as to who won the top prize from the recent meet.....so many to chose from.....
Anyway have a great summer....peace, love and stay safe!

update & suggestions -- .., Tuesday July 05 2005 [4] (NoHost/24.244.151.200)
Just wanted to know when the record page was going to be updated or if it was possible for a print-out to be posted at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Center with all the recent records on it, swimmers need something to strive for!! Also, I was wondering if the BSF and the staff at the 50m pool could come to an agreement about leaving stuff at the pool. If they refuse to open the changing rooms, then what's the purpose of them there?? Either open the changing rooms or have lockers or a container for each swim club that is accessible at ALL TIMES to swimmers and coaches so we won't have to lug mesh bags from pool to school to pool each day!

I can not believe after all that has happened, there is still someone who thinks nationals were "unfair" and swimmers were cheated out of their high point trophy. ALL of the Swift Swimmers that participated in nationals this year qualified OUTSIDE of our time trial that was not illegal. We all participated and had a great time, and as a result we won nationals, end of story. Nobody was cheated out of anything.
Personally I am overjoyed that nationals are over, and I am moving out of the country for university. I am not sure if i could take all these politics for much longer. The swimmers could do a better job of running the federation than any of you, at least we get along.
My view is, follow the rules... and KNOW the rules, and get over it. If you want things to change, then YOU make the change. Other than that.... I hope Jesus can help US ALL 'carpio'.

- Please enlighten us -- about other closed time trials, Monday July 04 2005 [4] (NoHost/24.244.159.185)
Please enlighten us as to when another closed "closed time trial" ever occured in the past. I have heard this floating around latelly as well. If it happened at the Aquatic Center or St. Johns Pool it would have been well publicized.
In fact the last time trial I have any knowledge of was at St. Johns pool before Nationals last year. It was fully sanctioned and it was OPEN and attended by members of all clubs.

- Closed Time trials -- Hope this helps........, Thursday June 30 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.244.178.232)
Closed time trials are used throughout the swimming world all the time.
They are not new to swimming in the Bahamas and as long as this writer has been involved in swimming, for over 15 years, this writer has been involved as a parent and official at many such meets.
A closed time trial is an event that a Club can run for its members only and as such there is no need to "advertise".
Closed time trials are often a competitive swimmers first introduction to competition.......it is at these events that young and older but "newbes" can learn the ropes about competition....think about how intimidating it must be at 9 years old to have only trained in a familiar 25 m or 25 yd facility and then you have to face the 50m "ocean" pool on your first time out to compete...
Closed time trials in the Bahamas are only allowed to qualify swimmers for Nationals....a time from a closed time trial cannot qualify you for a National Team.......
In the last two months there have been three applications from member clubs for closed time trials........it is curious as to why only one application has drawn so much attention?
In the withdrawal of the swimmers who qualified by SWIFT Swimming Club a father who is an ex-Olympian has now been denied the opportunity of competing with his daughter in her first Nationals......other older swimmers who have returned to the sport (and who knows may be our future Master Gold medalists) and have been training hard have now been denied the opportunity to swim and as they put it "find out where they are". This is the human side.....
To deny them even the opportunity of swimming as exhibition swimmers is a shame.......
SWIFT did not make the final decision because they agree with the grievance.......they made it for the betterment of swimming......in the longer term.
There will be differences of opinion.......but in the future do your research.....with the internet it is easy these days to see what is what....
I expect stellar performances at these Nationals from the dedicated, hard woring individuals who this is really all about...please celebrate the excellence and get to know the sport a little better.....

- BE CAREFUL WITH THE BOMBS -- PEACE TO YOU BROTHER, Tuesday June 28 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.244.178.232)
The action of not participating in a National Swimming Championship can only hurt the swimmers...no one else.
The Time trial was a BSF sanctioned time trial just as all the time trials held by all clubs were sanctioned.
This type of time trial is legitimate as set out in the BSF Rule Book (old and new).
There is a process in place to deal with the complaint. It may not be a perfect process but it is what we have written in the rules which govern this Federation.
It is interesting to note that each time matters are addressed and answered with the facts the story changes.
What is the real problem???
There were no swimmers imported or exported. The swimmers you are referring to are Bahamian citizens....just like you and me. They are duly registered and in financial good standing....they also represented their country proudly at the most recent CARIFTA Swimming Championships.
Shame on the writer for dragging this one back.......
have some common decency.....leave the children alone!
You should also all be reminded that if the BSF was still operating under the "old" rule book many swimmers and clubs would not be eligible to participate at Nationals at all......for example the family point system and the rule stating that all clubs must hold at least one meet per year at the 50 meter pool! There are many more that could have easily run the entire BSF family into the ground in one swoop of the executives pen.....
The time standards established were time standards agreed to by all the Coaches of the Clubs threatening to boycott.
This is laughable at best to now spin it to say SWIFT is responsible........come on guys enough now!
This certainly shouldn't be about anything other than the swimmers........who have all trained to the best of their ability and now can't participate because their clubs refuse to agree to follow the rules and the due process?
Kangaroo courts are out of date..........
There is a process.........let it govern.

- Bombshell -- To Looking Forward, Tuesday June 28 2005 [2] (NoHost/24.244.159.185)
This is not a case of black crab. However, it is most unfortunate that this had to happen right before Nationals.
It also is unfortunate that new parents and swimmers are influenced by misinformation but it all depends on who is feeding you garbage. The good people that run these clubs, and on a volunteer basis I might add, know the nature of the beast and I think you should give them a little more credit. These good people have nothing to gain financially and they do what they do only for their kids. That being said it's up to you who you choose to listen to.
SWIFT tried to slip the "Time Trial" in under the radar and they got caught. It seems that clubs are now finally fedup with both the federation and SWIFT and will put up with this foolishness no more.
Earlier this year SWIFT had the time standards slowed so they could get more swimmers into Nationals.
Earlier this year SWIFT imported swimmers so they could get more kids in Nationals.
Earlier this year SWIFT changed the rules to allow swimmers to swim as many events as they qualified for, instead of the usual 6, so they could get more points at Nationals.
Earlier this month SWIFT had a closed Time Trial so they could get more kids in Nationals. Wonder how many DQ's there we're at this "Time Trial"? No results were ever posted on the BSF website.
The BSF said the swimming has become more "swimmer friendly" looks like swimming has become more "SWIFT friendly".
NOT!

- PARENTS AND COACHES AND CLUBS NEED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT -- LOOKING FORWARD, Monday June 27 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.244.178.232)
The Parents, Clubs and Coaches in this jurisdiction need to ask themselves how they can move their children, athletes, parents and their clubs constructively forward.
Obviously the planning for athletes development and club growth is not being done very well. Today the internet alone offers huge amounts of well documented information re: swim training, coaching and club development.
To keep doing what you have always done and expecting different results is a definition of insanity........
This idea that a club has cheated their way into the Nationals is absurd.......but nevertheless this is where the mindset of those who are in control of clubs rests today.Unfortunatly many parents of new swimmers are influenced by mis information....
Please reflect on your own clubs..are they doing their best? How can they improve? There is certainly lots of room......so what are you going to do?
Please no more whining.....no more black crab....
Onward, Upward, Together.....perhaps our forefathers were wiser than us!

- facts -- carpio, Friday June 24 2005 [2] (NoHost/65.75.85.22)
The fact is the referee you claim was used for the time trial has not been around a pool almost since her children went away to school, the stroke judges you claim were use has not authority to officiate by themselves as they has not been officially certify as yet.
It smell fishy when a club has been participating in all the swimming club meets and suddenly because not enough of their swimmers has qualify for nationals then do a trial just for that club.
The fact is in the last official swimming meet hosted by SeaBees club some of this swimmers did not even do a time close to qualify for nationals and in this trial some of the results or times indicate that they are almost ready for major international events.
And the last fact is you people are not going to get away with it, simple as that.
Always concern for the swimmers who try hard to achieve personal goals and do not need anyone to lie for them to make it in life.

I am told that the facts pertaining to this issue have all been addressed in writing to the Clubs concerned. It should therefore be noted that continuation of dissemination of mis-information on this message board in regards to the matter can only be construed as a willful act to disrupt.
Why?
It would be appropriate for someone to post the facts as they pertain to the questions raised.
In everything there is something to be learned......
in this case perhaps Coaches and Clubs can now use the various types of time trials available to them under the rules of the BSF to assist swimmers in reaching their goals.

yesterday -- Carpio, Thursday June 23 2005 [2] (NoHost/65.75.85.22)
Swift swimming club had trial for nationals all by themselves yesterday. Well there was not referee, no stroke judges, no chief timer, no starter and no other club was invited.
It is amazing how something like this could happen.
Are people that desperate?
I would not want any of my swimmers to go to an event that they did not qualify properly.
This meet is not in the calendar of BSF and it is NOT LEGAL.
I would like to know what position Mr. Cargill is going to take on this one since he has relatives swimming in that club.
I hope a fair one, for the sake of his integrity.
Well remember, the officials should ALWAYS BE FAIR TO ALL SWIMMERS.
Can't wait for a reply on this one Mr. Cargill.

My suggestion.
It seems that some clubs are so desperate to lie so their swimmers could be at nationals then the rest of the clubs should let them swim all by themselves.
It will be interested to have nationals with only one club participating.
I see Mr. Cargill refuses to answer my previous email.
I am sure by now he knows what "we" Bahamians do to people who see themselves in power positions and then become arrogant and refuse to listen to people who elected them in the first place.
Waiting for the next BSF elections.

- Disgust with the message board -- RayAllan, Wednesday June 01 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.231.34.75)
Hi everyone,
I am a new swimmer in Nassau, N.P. but it is not my first time swimming competitively. I love this sport and i started because I enjoy it. However this message board is very upsetting... I wish that one day I make it to Carifta(that is my dream) but until then i would have to do some serious thinking. Because this mess. board has open my eyes to the degrading and insulting respect that us as swimmers recieve.
This is no time to act like this. We have to join together and we can make this sport rise to the top. I swam in Florida before and this(the 'bickering' and negative respect for swimmers and certain coaches).. was not heard of..WHY..Why only here.
We can do something about this.. Do not only type 'you mind' act!!!! I am going to do something personally about this and i hopw that u get the point out too.

- it's really time to move on -- Alana Dillette, Saturday April 30 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.244.179.121)
I have been reading these messages for quite some time now, and am finally deciding to respond, as a swimmer and as someone who is just concerned about where this sport goes in the future. First of all, I think that all those who are continuously writing these messages need to take a real stand and put their real names to their messages. None of this is going to be resolved if we keep getting messages from ‘anonymous’ people. Arguing over the internet is definitely not going to change anything. This past Carifta was my last, and I must say from experience it was the best one I ever had; swimming wise and especially team wise, and what was done for the team. When I first started Carifta we had to PAY to go on the trip, even if we had made the times. We had to pay… to go on a trip… to represent our country?? We never got towels, or bags, or massage therapists, just to name a few. Although some people may think that all of that is a waste of time, I can tell you that it isn’t. Having all the same, very nice attire… made us feel more like a team, and more confident going into the meet, and I am SURE that it did a good job at intimidating the other athletes at the meet. The massage therapists this year did an excellent job. I used to think that therapist didn’t really make a difference if you weren’t already used to them before hand… BUT let me tell you, that I can recall some days at Carifta where I thought I couldn’t take another stroke, and after visiting Yasmine… I feel 200% better. It may have been a physiological thing for all I know, but I appreciated having them there. …Touching on the water polo team, this may have been said time and time again… but there has also been a lot of lack of enthusiasm for them as well. They may not be the greatest, NOT YET…but you only get better through hard work AND EXPERIENCE. Yes the bsf has to spend money to send them on trips, but hopefully in the end it will benefit them…the bsf, and maybe one day our entire country. You have to have faith, and stop trying to put people down. As for the people who don’t appreciate the efforts put in by Carifta swimmers… the people who think that it is ‘just and age group meet’, and after this everyone stops swimming anyhow. Carifta may be an age group meet… and yes, you may be right in saying that a lot of swimmers do stop after age group swimming. However, you have to start somewhere… and Carifta is a terrific meet to aim for as an age group swimmer. And, I don’t know the reason why so many swimmers have stopped in the past… but I could guess it may have something to do with all the negativity within this sport… and on this message board. We swimmers need support… from every parent and every club involved, we don’t need to be reading about how you hate the white swimmers and coaches in the community … we don’t need to read about what is unfair and what’s fair, life isn’t fair, and EVERTHING can not go EVERYONE’S way. Of course you are going to agree with some things… disagree with others. Either you deal with it, or try to make a change. I am finished age group swimming now, and am sorry to say that I am kind of happy. Most swimmers start off the sport just as a means of having fun… and then they end up at my age reading bsf news and wanting to get as far away from the sport as possible. Personally I love the sport… and I enjoy training and seeing myself improve because of hard work I’ve put in, I also enjoy other swimmers doing the same thing. If we have to spend all our time hearing about what’s unfair, we will never have any time to train and help the sport move forward and NOT backward. Anyways I feel as though this has been a bit long, but as you can see… I had a lot to say… and what you all are saying doesn’t only affect the adults, but we swimmer read this stuff too…

Old Timer - why attempt a disguise when everyone knows who you are? Your grapes are so sour that it's amusing that you attempt to disguise your name..but we all know who you are. Your points are all negative and I am not surprised that they are....but you must admit that everyone is happier and the only fighting that exists is what you start. But after 2 years, people are smarter and wiser and your following has reduced to the misguided few. They too will see the light soon.....or remain with you in your misery. I'm a parent and traveled with the TEAM to Carifta. I've never seen a happier group of swimmers. I compare it to the days when I traveled with the former administration...NIGHT AND DAY! Stick to what you do best.....

- Old Timer....remember to give the facts -- Old Timer Two, Friday April 22 2005 [1] (NoHost/24.244.179.121)
Old Timer......there are others of us that have been around the BSF and the swimming community for as long as you.....I'm interested to know the following:
1. The facts on the "drstically" declining numbers......which numbers....over what years....in what areas?
2. Who are the potentially good swimmers that water polo took?.........no don't bother answering this oie because they are all potentially good swimmers.......however they may have been ex-swimmers had they not been given the opportunity through Water Polo to continue "staying in the water" ..
3. The perfectly good rule book......not sure about that either......contradictions abounded.....many said the whole rule book should have been thrown out and re-written.......it was full of contradictions and punitive rules......don't even open that can of worms......
4. Please Old Timer....who did the BSF "let" travel to CARIFTA who didn't make the cuts......
5. Poor promotion..of what????? please note that when presenting opinion you need to be back your opinion up by fact......
This could be interesting because perhaps it is time that the statistics and other facts be put togther to allow individuals to see the "real" picture of aquatics in the Bahamas......
FACT:
Do members remember the day when the Natuional team members had to always pay their own airfare to CARIFTA, CCCAN, CISC.....oh my mistake they didn't have to pay their way to CCCAN....because they were never given the opportunity to go in the first place......but the Officials travelled.......hmmmmm.....talk about killing an athletes desire to keep competing.......oh and how could we forget.......the Family Island swimmers selected to National teams to represent their country having to find their own funding to get to the capital and thier own accomodation and food while at the meet to participate in the first CARIFTA at the BKKAC CARIFTA
Old Timer you are on to something for sure......may the facts of the history of swimming in The Bahamas be researched and compiled for all to read and understand

Excuse me Snake but I honestly have tried to ease up, but these guys just won't give me a chance.
Has anything "positive" happened within our orginization as of late.
1. Drastically declining numbers contributed to the following:
a. Poor promotion on part of the BSF
b. Water Polo taking a lot of the potentially good swimmers.
2. The "rewriting" of a perfectlly good rule book.
3. Letting swimmers who did not qualify for the Carifta Team travel with the team.
4. The slowing of time standards.
Yes, I am upset about these things and if no else wishes to speak up thats their business. And just because I am saying it doesnt mean others aren't thinking it too. All of these things will eventually help to contribute to the erosion of our sport.
Each
