Subject: YIKES! Why the heck didn't your surgeon use something to numb you before stitching? When my last son was born the doctor started stitching me up without numbing me first. He did the first three stitches before I began to protest loudly. Since Casey had been born before the doctor arrived, and he was used to numbing the area before the birth, he simply forgot I hadn't had anything, and apologized. Even 40 or more years ago, anyone who would stitch without giving a child something first, sounds like a monster!

  • OOps... in my upset at your Doctor I forgot to say that particular piece of metal could have killed John if it had worked its way in the opposite direction into his heart or lungs. Thank goodness it didn't! (NT) -- Jane, 06:15:49 01/28/08 Mon

  • It's a funny thing about our immune system but it is geared to expel whatever is not supposed to be there. Quite often, rather than dig after a splinter if you leave it the inflammation will push it out. Likewise, John's system did for the metal bit although it took a bit longer than the average splinter. Good thing he was not on active duty and able to forego his usual athletics. Re - my stitches: I put my hand through a window and caused a gash over the visible veins in my wrist. With all the vessels and nerves and musculature in the wrist the doc decided it was too dangerous to inject any novacaine. I was on a gurney with my wrist strapped to a board. They had my brother (who was the responsible person home when it happened and drove me to the ER) sit on the opposite side and talk to me while they stitched. They mercifully did only 4, I still have the scars. (NT) -- kgp, 08:23:35 01/28/08 Mon

  • Hi Jane! (and others), I have been so worried that this board may have died. Thank goodness I came wandering back today to discover it fully alive and kicking!! I love how the image of the metal shard is woven throughout this story- the beautiful way DG manages to weave the compass metaphor ("you are true north") in a way that is much more than emotional- John's love for Jaime is visceral, physical, and emotional. The shard within him is like his love for Jaimie- potentially fatal, but with its constant pain, irrevocable and unforgettable. (NT) -- Oleander, 12:47:41 01/28/08 Mon
