I don't know about anybody else, but I was genuinely worried about that sliver of metal for the whole story up to this point. I kept thinking, does he still have it, years later when we meet him in VOYAGER and DRUMS? Why didn't he tell Claire about it? How can he lead such a vigorous lifestyle with something like that imbedded in his chest? I was very glad to see him get rid of it. (And note the needle imagery in this quote - foreshadowing of the bit about the compass needle later. I love that!) -- LJG Discussion board

yes, i wonder what else it foreshadows? The metaphor we are presented with so beautifully also seems to give some clues to the future of their relationship. Will John be able, someday to resolve his feelings for Jaime so that he can love him without the constant guilt and pain? I never thought about it in those terms before, but that's exactly what John and Jamie need: A way to "excise" the thing causing the pain (in this case, their memories, the awkwardness of their shared history to this point) so that they can finally become friends. - I also thought that the fragment was also tied to his relationship with Percy. All through Haunted Soldier you know that John is almost physically well, apart from the splinter, but he is still suffering emotionally from all that went on in Germany.
