Subject: I don't know about anybody else, but I was genuinely worried about that sliver of metal for the whole story up to this point. I kept thinking, does he still have it, years later when we meet him in VOYAGER and DRUMS? Why didn't he tell Claire about it? How can he lead such a vigorous lifestyle with something like that imbedded in his chest? I was very glad to see him get rid of it. (And note the needle imagery in this quote - foreshadowing of the bit about the compass needle later. I love that!)
