The gulf between Lord John and Jamie is so wide at this point, it's hard to imagine how they will ever be able to become friends. • On the first read, I assumed this was just about what happened at Ardsmuir and John was picturing the brutality of Jamie's flogging. Then I realized John was remembering what it felt like when Percy flogged him in BOTB. It adds so much more meaning to John begging forgiveness from Jamie.       • Wow, Karen and Oleander, reading your posts reminds me exactly why this board is so important! John deserves the depth of understanding and sympathy you have both shown him here. While these books are shorter and perhaps don't have as many really important characters, I believe they are every bit as deep, and deserve just as much energy in their discussion as THE BOOKS do. It kills me to see them virtually dismissed as not being worth the bother to read by some of the folks on the other boards. If we were to try to have a discussion like this anywhere else it is possible we'd encounter some negative energy we don't need by people who've not even read the books.         • Jane - I know you have expressed concerns recently about this board maybe closing soon for lack of interest. I, for one, think it ought to remain open indefinitely, as a "Lord John-centered" board, for anyone who is interested in discussions focused on the LJ books. Maybe not a "Hand of Devils" board (there doesn't seem to be nearly as much interest in that as there was in BOTB last summer/fall) but opened up for discussions on LJ-related topics of all kinds.           • I concur…..A book board for all the “Lord John” books would be great! With 2 novels and the 3 short stories in print, one more novel to come “LJ & The Scottish Prisoner” , and herself saying she has agreed to write another short story for a “anthology” and implies it will also feature LJG….There will be no shortage of material to discuss….I also think LJ’s popularity will continue to grow just like the Outlander series…..Oh What Fun!!! There are times when this board is slow, but at the same time, I love coming here for the indepth discussions we get as well that might be intrusive on the other boards.               • When this board is slow it is easy enough to pop in occasionally just to see what's up. It's certainly worth the energy to keep it around for the times really great discussions DO get going! I love thinking back to the energy and momentum we've seen in the past here where you ladies dazzle me with your insights! I would be really sad to think of going back to only one board were John is viewed as a minor background character at best and even viewed with hostility and suspicion by some who will never take time to read his books and will therefor never give themselves an opportunity to get to know him as we do.         • I've not been here much as I just got my own copy of BOTB, but all your comments are very enlightening. Maybe Jane, et. al. should propose a subject or two for Broch Talk discussion about Lord John. That's a good place to delve into the arcana of such delightful subjects as honor, etc. It never hurts to ask.           • Oh Carol, You are way too kind. It is only that you, Catherine, and Jesse have set the bar so high for the introductions to the Broch talk discussions, I'd be terrified to even attempt one myself. I'd feel that way even if the subject weren't as contentious as Lord John. There are those who take any mention of John as a red flag before a bull, especially if we were to start talking about John and his sense of honor, they see him as anything BUT honorable. We can never change their minds. While you and I can't imagine NOT reading every scrap of anything Diana writes, these people have no intention of EVER reading the Lord John books. That's why we need to keep this board open in some form, so we can keep a place for the discussion of John's books and if people who don't care for John come here, they can hardly be shocked or upset by our passion for him.             • There are another couple of short stories Diana has written that don't belong on either of the boards I also think it would be fun to discuss. They fit nowhere else. One is "A Stillness at the Heart" from the book; Father's and Daughters. A non-fiction story about the death of her father..heartbreaking. There is a fiction story, written with her daughter Laura in another collection of short stories; Mother's and Daughters, it's called "Dream a Little Dream for Me" fun and fascinating. I can't imagine not wanting to read every word she's written myself. People who claim to be fans, but refuse to read John's books surprise me. I can believe the tiny short stories might not be worth the trouble for some people to bother looking for them.               • Personally, I would much rather keep our discussions focused on the stories that are readily available to everyone. How about a discussion of "Succubus", if you don't think it's been beaten to death already? I've seen almost no discussion of that story since HAND OF DEVILS came out, and to me, at least, it's a brand new story, even if it might be very old news to the rest of you.                 • I' doing the Stephan portions of Succubus my next turn for QOTD 2/17. Last time I picked the first Stephan quote I liked from Succubus, I already had too many from PM and BOB. I hadn't reread Succubus in years or I would have remembered there were tons of great quotes I could have used to illustrate my points even better than those I'd picked. You are right if we are doing a Lord John board we should focus on his books. My point was I didn't think people should dismiss a whole chunk of a favorite author's books as not worthy of their time. Usually, if we like an author's style ALL of their books are worthy. I am thinking of Jane Austen, P&P is my favorite, Emma and Persuasion tie for 2nd, but I'd still rather read say Northhanger Abby than a Nora Roberts or any of the other (cranks out a book a month) author's offerings. Not to say I don't read those others occasionally, just that I KNOW when I pick up Austen, Bronte, or Gabaldon I will be reading something worthy of my time. (NT) -- Jane, 06:46:24 02/01/08 Fri

    • What I felt to be one of the most striking parts of BOTB is Jamie asking John if he thought Jamie's situation 'honorable' and John's realization of Jamie's humiliation and shame at being 'kept' by a sodomite rather than being transported or hanged. John's chagrin at learning this, his utter astonishment that what he had intended as kindness and as much leniency as he could manage was seen as shamefilled debasement, cuts him to the quick. • I know Diana wants us to feel the way we do about John. She always leaves me aching for him. Wanting so badly for him to find someone to love who is worthy of him and his love. Wanting to be able to comfort him and assure him that love is coming and is worth the wait, but mostly VERY IMPATIENT on his behalf. I am certain that is a great part of what I find so compelling about John and his story. So, the author is doing her job, always leaving me wanting more, in a way only Diana seems to be able to do for me.
