Subject: John, living the way he does...must be conflicted...if he believes... than he also must be convinced his soul is damned (a popular view of the time that some religious sects still cling to even now). That can not be an easy thing to live with. I do think, based on a few of the things that John has said, that he believes in God. I'd like to believe that he could have been thanking Jesus here rather than it being and exclamation, I hope that he has found a way inside himself to make peace with his beliefs. I have to paraphrase here because it is dark and the DH is sleeping behind me as I type..can't look it up. I think he told Percy that God made them what they were and it didn't seem "thrifty" of God to create people just to damn them. It seems a perfectly logical argument to me.
In reply to: ErinD 's message, "I'm coming in late to this quote (been away from this Board for a few days) and what strikes me about this passage is the "Jesus, thank you" comment. Perhaps I am reading this incorrectly, but is he thanking Jesus for the shrapnel coming out, or do you think Jesus is meant more as an exclamation and the thank you more of a general comment? I just think about this in light of all the descriptions of John as "rational" as opposed to religious." on 05:13:25 02/02/08 Sat
