The following quote is taken from Lord John and the Succubus, Chapter 7, Ambush by Diana Gabaldon. This short story was published in LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF DEVILS Copyright (c) 2007

I'm pondering the differences in John's relationships. he infatuation and respect for Jamie, his physical attraction and casual realtionship with Percy, his acknowledgement of Neal TC's attractiveness but resistance to it, and his growing regard and attraction to Stephan - in PM it wasn't until the fireworks at the end that he really looked at Stephan, until then he was a fellow soldier and social acquaintance assisting in the pursuit of Trevelyan. If Stephan hadn't requested John's presence as liason to the Hanoverian troops likely john would have not thought of him again, let alone pondered a relationship. (NT) -- kgp, 05:04:53 02/22/08 Fri
- When John first met Stephan he was put out by his size and tendency to "loom" over him. Later in Private Matter John started thinking that Stephan looked like a "German Saint" I think Stephan was starting to look pretty darn good to him. It wasn't till Stephan put "a large, warm hand on the nape of Grey�s neck, and bending down to look searchingly into his face." that John started to suspect there was more to the way Stephan looked at him.   - Saint's are necessarily romantically attractive. Most seem to have been rather tedious. He also describes Weber as looking like an arch angel and doesn't he also describe Neal TC in iconic terms? I think there's a growing awareness in John that his spiritual side is wanting. That's why he puzzles over Jamie's certainty in God's direct interest in accounting for a man's actions versus his own vague wedding and funeral religiosity.     - A great deal of the art of the time was religious in nature, even pastoral scenes had religious overtones. While people and their environs as a whole were dirty, dark, and ragged, visions of heaven and the saints were shining and beautiful in a necessarily unearthly fashion. I do think John wanted to be spiritual, it was just so hard for him since all of society during his time believed because of what he was, he was by his nature damned. I got a little misty when John looked down on the sleeping face of his new niece at her baptism in BOB and swore that "He did not know if he might believe. But for her, he would try."
