Subject: Thanks for coming back to give us some more lovely LJ moments, Jane! This one is a treat to revisit -- I love this image of John "dying" from a stab wound inflicted by his enthusiastic nephews. For some reason it puts me in mind of his other "pretend" swordfight in BOTB -- the verra sexy fencing scene where he bests Hal to impress Percy. These mock battles show how the bonds of brotherhood are forged both within a generation, and across the generations, via timeless rituals involving combat and good-natured (if sometimes quite intensely fought) rivalry.

  • This scene reminds me of Roger telling Bree how he and the Reverend would stomp around the study as monsters slaying bad guys and destroying things. And Ian's letter to Jamie where Ian tells about having to be an Indian with mud on his face as war paint so the bairns can kill him. This is one of the things that great dads do, I think. I am sooo sure John was a wonderful father. (NT) -- Carol P, 19:11:43 03/08/08 Sat

  • Good point. I love the way John is with kids. He relates to them very naturally. I hope we get some glimpses in ECHO (maybe through Willie's memories) of what John was like as a father. (NT) -- Karen Henry, 05:41:31 03/09/08 Sun

  • Exactly Carol! I though of Roger and the Reverend when reading this scene. How lucky he was to raise Roger and not miss out on fatherhood due to his calling and how lucky John was getting to raise Willie, not just for Jamie's sake but for his opportunity to be a father as well!
