Subject: I agree, so much potential there for Percy to have been "the one". It's so sad that he'd had such a poor beginning, if only he'd have been raised as John was, perhaps he would have been a more honorable man. Of course, if John had settled down into "happily ever after" what would THAT have done to the rest of the story?

  • I see this as Percy, the confidante. He was such a gentle and patient listener, seeming to know just the right thing to say to draw John out. And John shows how no matter how many times he'd thought about the incident, clarity comes when the story is voiced aloud. He'll experience a similar thing when he finally speaks of it to Hal and confronts his mother a few months later. (NT) -- tlk2vicki, 07:45:00 12/28/07 Fri

  • Interesting that you should say that. Compare this to the scene in "Haunted Soldier" where John feels the same urge to confide in someone, but there is no one at all he can talk to, so he puts his thoughts down on paper (ostensibly in a letter to Jamie, but even he knows that's just an excuse.) I think that in other circumstances, he might have been a journal-keeper, like Hal and his father, except of course that his private thoughts often concern things he doesn't dare risk anyone else ever reading about. His love for Jamie, for example. (NT) -- Karen, 08:05:12 12/28/07 Fri
