I see this as Percy, the confidante. He was such a gentle and patient listener, seeming to know just the right thing to say to draw John out. And John shows how no matter how many times he'd thought about the incident, clarity comes when the story is voiced aloud. Interesting that you should say that. Compare this to the scene in "Haunted Soldier" where John feels the same urge to confide in someone, but there is no one at all he can talk to, so he puts his thoughts down on paper (ostensibly in a letter to Jamie, but even he knows that's just an excuse.) I think that in other circumstances, he might have been a journal-keeper, like Hal and his father, except of course that his private thoughts often concern things he doesn't dare risk anyone else ever reading about.
