What you said about 'polished'. I think that's why I felt like attacking Stubbs was out of character. When I really think about it (and several examples later) I am ready to agree that LJ is quite ready to be violent is necessary, so much of what we see of him is suave and cool it takes me by surprise that he can be a fighter. -- LJG Discussion board

He's quite fond of Olivia and after her initial marriage plans fell through so spectacularly I think he is even more concerned for her happiness. To find Stubbs maintaining such an attachment when Olivia has been steadfast and true, plus so devoted to Stubb's son, would surely enrage a man such as John, His willingness to break Nicholl's nose based on leering comments to the Lady shows he takes his responsibility toward women's honor seriously.
