  • Jamie's relationship with God is interesting. He converses with God like Tevye sometimes but along with faith in the hereafter has faith that his God is a distributor of punishment, ie - in V he fully accepts that he is to spend some time in limbo atoning for his earthly sins. John's view is quite common I find. God exists but any involvement with mankind was a long long time ago and has little to do with us these days. I liked John's speculations in this book. The faith questions Diana raises are yet one more reason to read closely. (NT) -- kgp, 04:47:00 11/25/07 Sun

  • A couple of observations: 1) at this point in the story, Jamie's faith in the hereafter is his *only* hope that he will ever be reunited with Claire. No wonder he clings to it so tightly! 2) Jamie's belief in an afterlife is almost the only thing keeping him alive, in this time at Helwater when he has so little to live for -- because he believes that suicide is a mortal sin.
