Subject: Ok, Karen, I knew that was coming! I have yet to do the re-read, so bear with me. The opening scenes are gripping. The background of exploding ordnance set a vivid scene. I was startled to find a usually composed Lord John tremulous, irritable, and rather undone. I see this deriving from a combination of physical pain, decreased endurance, and a touch of post traumatic stress disorder. I was shocked when John upped and left the official inquiry session...so unlike him! (but I was pleased that he did!) From a point of honor, his departure seemed understandable. But as a professional officer? I found his action to be both out of character for John and a plausible reaction for John.
In reply to: Karen 's message, "How about posting some of your questions/speculations, just to get the discussion going? For me, the end of Haunted Soldier left me in much the same frame of mind as BOTB with regard to the relationship between Lord John and Jamie, and where they go from here. Interesting to see LJ struggling with the same questions we talked about at length when BOTB came out: his shock and regret over the incident in the stable, his guilt over the Ardsmuir flogging, and most of all, how to re-establish any sort of relationship with Jamie? I am now more eager for SCOTTISH PRISONER than ever." on 07:40:59 12/02/07 Sun
