SCOTTISH PRISONER seems a very long way away now, doesn't it? I agree that it is an author's job to leave us hungry for more, but at the rate herself writes and the multiple irons she has in the fire at any given time..it is going to be a torturous wait indeed. Thank goodness there are so many themes and layers, for us to explore. Teddie's example is perfect. I see the time between books allowing us to explore what is going on in the different scenes mean to us. We can "talk" about not only the trail itself but John's disintegration of composure while just sitting in the hall waiting to go in with him ending up with him on the floor. -- LJG Discussion board

For me, the end of Haunted Soldier left me in much the same frame of mind as BOTB with regard to the relationship between Lord John and Jamie, and where they go from here. Interesting to see LJ struggling with the same questions we talked about at length when BOTB came out: his shock and regret over the incident in the stable, his guilt over the Ardsmuir flogging, and most of all, how to re-establish any sort of relationship with Jamie? - I really felt for poor John later when he makes a little joke to ease the tension a tiny bit and gets brow beaten for it. These guys are out looking for a scapegoat and John looks like the most likely candidate right up to the point where he did decide to walk out and do his own investigation.
