Yes, it rings so true to adolescent self-consciousness that he would not want anyone to know how curious he was. I love this chapter title, too, which seems ironic to me, since later in the book he realizes that he is actually quite a gambler, and good at it. He doesn't care to gamble at cards, for its own sake, but he is constantly risking himself in more serious "games", with verra high stakes. I hadn't seen him in this light before, but this books really brings out this aspect of his character (being able to outwit the opponent, the impassive poker face, the control of tactics and emotion), which I think is yet another area of common ground with Jamie. -- LJG Discussion board

Yes, and yet I thought the chapter title referred to Hal. Still ironic, given what John discovers about Hal's mad wager in the betting-book. And I think the bit in a later chapter is kind of touching, where Hal sends him a note that reads "Luck" before the battle, and John thinks that he values this even more because he knows Hal doesn't believe in luck. - Yes, it's one of the things I so appreciate about these books: often the "symbolic" phrases, such as chapter titles or oft-repeated expressions, can be construed as having multiple layers of meaning. "Brotherhood" and "blade" being two such words, and both contained in this book's very evocative title. I see the word "outlander" (sassenach) itself this way, and also some nicknames such as "Red Jamie," or "the Thrush" for Roger.
