Subject: Quote Of The Day for Monday November 5, 2007

The following quote is taken from Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 2 – "Not A Betting Man". Copyright (c) 2007 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

"He still felt the shock of Hal's throwing the paper into the fire, and could not bear the thought that those words of his father's, pedestrian as they may be, should be lost to him. The duke's journals were no secret, and yet he had read them secretly, abstracting one at a time and smuggling each volume to his room, returning them to their shelf, careful that no one should see."

In the second sentence of this quote, I picture an adolescent John. His furtive, yet determined exploration of his father's journals speaks of both loyalty and shame.
